Changing gears in D60

I got my dana 60 a while ago and i have a set of 4:10's i am going to be putting in instead of 3:54. I have everything a part already and am wondering if it is hard putting them back together. The part I am wondering about is putting in the little shims and how many to put in. So if you guys could let me know the difficulty level, i would greatly appreciate it.

I think you were supposed to keep count of the shims you took out from where. Did you?

It is really pretty simple, the hardest part is fooling around with the torque on the crush sleeve. Here is a web link that gives a pretty good description of the procedures. http://www.drivetrain.com/ringpinioninstal.html

There is no crush sleeve in a dana 60, it's shimmed.

Also when you change gears the amount of shims side to side most probably will change, and the pinion depth shims need to me measured, then using the scrib marks on the pinions calculate which ones to put on the new pinion. Plus correct me if I am wrong but I believe going from a 3.54, to a 4.10 gear change you will also need a different series carrier on the D60

Your right, I had a brain fart. I was thinking of the one I did on an F-150, and that one had the crush sleeve. I do rear ends just often enough jumble things up.

Sorry, but I gotta say it:

Dana axles, albeit good axles, are STUPID.

Engineer #1: "Here we go. We'll design these with the carrier bearing shims behind the bearings. That'll really work good. This is a great design!!!"

Engineer #2; "I don't think that's a good idea, #1. People are going to hate us for doing that, seeing as though unless the proper case spreader and setup tools are used, the bearings will have to be pressed on and off repeatedly to get the backlash setup correctly."

Engineer #1: "Oh shut up you whining pansy, or I'll tell the boss. This way is better."

Engineer #2 was fired the next day for having a better idea.

Sorry, but I see a TON of engineer "What the [insert expletive] were they thinking?" stuff every day where I work and this is exactly how I feel about it. I think Engineer #1 still has a job at Dana/Spicer...probably CEO or something.

On all dana 60s the carrier break is at 4.56 and down...you can use 4.56 gears on the stock carrier.

Is it designed for 4.56's or is it that you can squeeze them in? I thought it was 4.10 down too.

You have to buy the thick 4.56 ring gear for the front to use the 3.54 -4.10 carrier and its expensive. Or you could just go ahead and get a new carrier and a thin ring gear, that way if you ever want to go lower you can.

Ok, that's what I assumed was that you could just FORCE the carrier to take a 4.56.

The carrier break is after 4.10. I did this to my truck. I bought used gears and swapped out my 3.73s If you don't take off the shims on the carrier, you just have to shim the pinion. It only takes a couple of tries- and yeah, it is stupid to have to remove the pinion just to adjust the shims. As far as the case spreader, I didn't need one.

Rarely do you...it's just to get the .010" preload. Just setup the shims a little tight. If you didn't change the carrier shims, you don't need a spreader (just makes installation/removal of the carrier a little difficult sometimes).
