I'm going to change out the engine in my wife's explorer do to engine wear from cracked heads. They have been replaced but I'm afraid the problem is back (coolant lose, foulded spark plug). So my question is what year or years of the 4.0 ohv engine is interchangeable? (I have a chance to buy a 2000 crate engine but it's almost more than the worth of the explorer.) Also thinking of a visit to the local junk yard, but would like to know what would work without alot of extra work. Thanks Scott
Any 4.0L OHV will work, but you'll have to keep some things from the original motor depending on what year you get. The job could entail a quick upper intake swap or possibly a little more. For example, earlier 4.0Ls used the 'batch-type" (MFI) fuel injection while the later 4.0Ls have the sequential (SEFI) type. So I think you'd want to keep the lower intake and fuel supply manifold from the original. And some of the earlier OHVs were also not equipped with an EGR system. In that case, you'd have to keep the exhaust manifold(s) and the rest of the EGR assembly from the original.
I have a Word document I found on the web that I can send you. Tells of all the changes to teh major motor components over the years - heads, blocks, cams, cranks. Could be of use. Send me a private message with your email address and ask me for this 4.0 rebuild document.
