Why would the driveshaft spin all the time? Even with auto-locking hubs(if they are working right), the driveshaft shouldn't spin unless it is being driven from the t-case regardless of the differential type. Or am I missing something.............
97-03 and 04+ F-150 4x4's have a Center Axle Disconnect system. There are no hubs in the wheels. Since these trucks have an independant front suspension, the front wheels are driven by Constant Velocity shafts which means they spin all the time when the truck is moving. (like a front wheel drive car). The C.A.D. is basically an axle shaft in the passenger side that can be locked together or unlocked to spin freely. In order for the truck to run in 2 wheel drive, the transfercase disengages the front driveshaft and a vacuum actuator disconects the front axle. The driver's side front tire still spins in shaft, but the it simply spins the spidergears inside the open front differential. If there was a limited slip or a locker, it would cause the differntial to spin and turn the front driveshaft. This will only add drag (albeit very minimal) but it would add wear and tear at the pinion and transfercase seals.
