15W40 or 30 question

Hello all --

I've seen numerous posts and advice that the 6.0L seems to like 30 weight oil better than 15W40. My first oil change was done at the dealer and they used 15W40 Motorcraft oil. I went looking for oil and can't find anything but 15W40 and therein lies my question. Where can I find what I need without having to pay shipping charges as oil -- being heavy -- will probably cost a lot to ship?

Thanks...

You are in the South and your Ford dealer used 15W-40. Does the engine run poorly? Does the owners manual specifically prohibit 15W-40? Otherwise, dont worry about it.

Is it 10w30 rated CI-4 you were looking for? No need to mail order. Look in your phone book yellow pages under 'oil distributors' or 'oil jobbers'. These guys supply bulk oil for farm, fleet and construction as well as packaged oil for retail. They are generally out of site in a warehouse area. They don't need an attractive store front because they don't depend on walk-in retail business.

Anyway, they are just as happy to sell over the counter retail. Besides the quart containers you normally see at retail, they also supply cases of 4 one gallon containers and 5 gallon buckets. They usually have product literature to hand out too!

Jim and Horsepuller, thank you for the responses.

Jim, the engine runs great. I just want to keep it that way. We of course know that the owner's manual does not prohibit 15W40...and I've read the manual from cover to cover several times. I'm not worried about the fact that the dealer used this oil on my first change. And for that matter, I used 15W40 in my 2000 F350 7.3L for five years and it did great...no engine problems at all except a water pump...
However, many, many folks on here have said that the 6.0L seems to like 30 weight oil better and I'm going to be changing my oil myself after these first couple of times. I'm trying to decide on the right oil/weight. Are you saying that 15W40 is fine to stick with for the long haul?

Horsepuller, thanks for that info!

If you are looking for straight weight 30 detergent oil go to a farm supply store.
