Oil drain plug torque specs.

Oil drain plug torque specs.

Anyone know the the torque specs for the oil drain plug on an 92 Aerostar with the 3.0?

Keeps leaking oil, but don't want to overtorque it.

If the threads are not stripped out, it sounds like you need a new plug from the dealer. If it was mine, I'd avoid the "fit-all" type of plugs that an aftermarket parts store might try to sell you. The factory plugs have the good rubber seal embedded in the metal gasket and are quite good.

If the pan threads are stripped, try an aftermarket plug-in-a-plug type.
The threads are slightly over sized on the main plug and a smaller plug screws into the main plug to drain your oil.

Remember that the plug threads will be metric on this one.

Thanks for that quick and detailed reply!

I agree it is probably the seal, tried a generic washer/gasket, and want to try the proper torque, actually the van is already sold, trying to help the young man that bought it.

Since we are both big guys, want to be careful we don't harm the threads.

And new plug may be only satisfactory end result as you say.

The torque for the drain bolt is 10 ft-lbf.

You may not need a new plug, just a new washer. I found that Harborfreight sells a whole assortment of copper washers for only a few dollars. I used those as seals for the drain plug and they work great.

I used an aftermarket plug on my Aero and it works fine probably you'll just need a new plug gasket though.

Also make sure the oil is not running down from the engine gasket and around the plug or from the pressure sender downward.
