we have a 1976 Ford E 350 27 ft minimotor home with a 460 eng. it has a new alternator, and a new starter. old alternator locked up and shorted out the old wiring harness. am in need of wiring diagram for alternator, voltage regulator, and cyliniod, also any information would be helpful. i have the 4 wire round plug and 2 wire oval , rather than the 3 pin flat and 2 pin flat plugs. have changed the voltage regulator, cyliniod, and revamped an old wiring harness for the standard ford alternator setup, but it still smokes the wires just below the cyliniod. thanks in advance,,,,,,
Sounds like you might still have a short circuit in the vehicle. If you disconnect the wire that keeps smoking will the vehicle still run? Do you know what circuits that are lost if you disconnect the wire below the solenoid. If you can disconnect that wire and the vehicle still runs charges then you have a short in the vehicle.
Disconnect the battery, then disconnect all the accessory wires from the positive side of the solenoid and test them for grounds one at a time. Try it with the key off/ key on/ turn on/off lamps etc. Note the resistance of the wires to ground. When everything is off you should have O ohms of resistance. Even with stuff on there should be several ohms of resistance.
