is there more than one version of the e40d tranny if so how do i decifer them?

How do you define versions? Latter (post '93) E4ODs have been updated to address the problems with earlier ones.

well what i mean is will any e40d tranny fit my truck because i have been calling around and people keep asking me which one i have i thought they were all the same?

The bellhousings are different to mate to different engines. You need to know what engine you have to get the right trans.
