Whats the secret?

I recently made an atempt to install a set of headers on my 360 and they leak like crazy where they bolt onto the head. I have never messed with headers before, so is there any technique for installing them that would maybe help cut down the leaking?

You could double up the gaskets. Also, some have better luck with certain types of gaskets.

did you torque them down right the new headers being sold now have are raised around the port to aid in sealing and it works well double gasketing is not reccomended they will blow out or leak and use a good thick graphite gasket like felpro

I have had the best luck with starting all the bolts, and then snugging then all -up starting from the center ports and working to the outside ports, and then torqing them down in that same way....

And yes , use a good header Gasket... I use Felpro also..and NO leaks!! I buy mine at the Local NAPA store!!

Good Luck,

Russ

I got my gaskets from NAPA (Nitroseal). Have not had any leaks. Are your heades new? How thick are the flanges? The thinner flanges are more prone to warping.
Good luck.

This answer has been around before, but make sure your headers and exhaust ports line up. There are a couple of different port height options. If memory serves, some of the older high-perf heads had the high port option, while the lowly truck heads had the low port heads. I'm sure the masters will step in here and give details.

I agree, it's about port matching. Especially with the cheaper headers having the pipe protruding thru the flange, creating a "Leak-Lip". I run the Fel-Pro 1442 gaskets as reccomended by Stan at FPA headers. I don't have any leaking issues, but that's probably due to the smooth 14 bolt flange of the FPA. But you need to make sure the gasket matches that lip on the header and the port on the head. I never could get my old set of Dynomax to seal up. I personally like the thicker composite types, as compared to the copper gaskets.
