test drive
i finally got to take a test drive today and i think somethings wrong...i have a 64 galaxie with a 390 and a 3 speed tranny and it wont even spin the tires. I thought it would spin them right off. Although there was 8 people in the car i didnt think it would matter. I have an edelbrock 625 so it should be getting lots of fuel. Im wondering if i have a problem or the trannys just really high geared

well i would check to see what kind of gears youre running. plus with 8 people in a 4000lb.+ car it may not feel like spinning the tires. i know i wouldnt. you gotta love those big galaxies, wish i had my 63 1/2 back.

Ok first take the 8 people out. Im betting you rear is an open 3.00:1, that seems to be the magical ratio they put in alot of galaxies. If you want to see if it will spin, hold the brake and stomp the gas. Ofcourse you didnt say weather it was a 3 speed auto or manual.

8 people is alot of added weight...especially if it has a higher gear rear end. In 64 a stock 390 puts out I think around 330 hp....but the stock rear ends were a high gear and that coupled with 8 people will bring the tire spinning to a halt.

Thanks for the replys!! a little more info its a 3 speed manual and a complete resto on the motor cam, pistons intake, headers... although i cant find a timing pointer anywhere. There are holes in the timing chain cover but no pointer. I was told its not a big deal, just play with it until you find the sweet spot but i dunno... anyone know where to find one?

you should be able to find a pointer at the local junk-yard or on ebay. You really need to see where the timing is. You can set it by ear or how it feels but you run a chance of pinging at the higher revs, especially with that kind of party going on in your car. Try setting it to 10BTDC when you get a pointer.

BTW, 8 people at an average weight of 150lbs= 1200lbs, that is not only harder to get moving, but it increased your traction by about 25%!
