OK, I was out driving tonight and I smelled battery acid. When I got home, sure enough, the battery was boiling away and it smelled awful. When I was driving (lights, stereo, fan) the amp gauge was reading at the 3/4 mark and did not drop until I was almost home. Is this a voltage regulator problem? I have a unique setup in that I'm running a 100 amp GM altenator tied to the standard Ford regulator. Any suggestions?
Slik,
How old is the battery ? Ive seen them do the same when one or more of the cells are dead ...The battery gets over charged , boils and the last one I saw , the sides of the battery were actually swelled from the pressure of the gases boiling . If you havent had trouble with the setup you have now ..Alternator / Regulator , Id say the battery is the problem . As far as I know , as long as the regulator can handle the load from the alternator it all should work ?
