I dont know, looked pretty real to me, of coarse they arnt going to have people in the truck when they do the stunt. I think it demonstrates how well it *could* perform in a head on crash or being rear-ended. notice how there was no cab deformation? The bed bolts commercial was simply just that, showing how tough Ford trucks are, and the attention to detail Ford has.
You don't really think that that skiny little bolt was the only thing holding that truck in the air do you? A bed bolt isn't going to make the sale for me. It's a cool LOOKING ad but it's as pointless as showing you how strong the glue is that holds the rear view mirror to the windshield. The dozer ad is just as pointless. Cool looking ad to say the least, but run the truck into a brick wall at 45mph and if it looks like the cab hasn't crushed much, now we're talking one tough truck.
Maybe I am brain washed, but the ad with the F150 hanging from its box bolts ad is supposed to make everyone think. After all if you are going to be putting up to 3000#'s in the bed of your truck would it not make you feel a little more comfortbale knowing that the bed of the truck is bolted right through the floor.
They have crashed the truck doing 40MPH, and no cab deformation what-so-ever. If you look closely(not that hard to see), they are hanging the truck by a couple bolts on that other commercial. Now, dont get me wrong, obviosly that is fake, but this bulldozer ad was real, and I believe it had a point. To show just how tough these trucks are, I dont get why when some people see sumthin cool, they all of a sudden get critical about everything.
"underbody digitally modified" probably means that they didn't want you to see the rear driveshaft buckle/the transfer case split in half/taking out the transmission case/bending the transmission mainshaft/costing thousands in drivetrain repairs had an insurance company actually not decided to total the vehicle.
Remember lifting with bolts is alot easier than jerking on it. Just pulling on a bolt it has alot of shear strength. Like pulling a 10000 lb trailer with only a 5/8" pin in your receiver hitch. You pull it all the time and not even thank about. Remember different grades of bolts have different shear strengths and load capacities.
Ford makes these ads for brand recognition just like everone else. Ever seen a frog talking and drinking Budweiser. They try and do something that will bring Ford to mind whenever a customer thinks about a new truck.
I agree that the commercial was intended just to make people think about the engineering detail put into the F-150. And for that, it works!
Problem is, the ad is so far fetched that it almost is counter-productive. All the GM guys would have to do is run the exact same commercial, except let the dozers keep moving for 5 more seconds and the F-150 would be a pancake. Then sum it up with a catchy "Hmm..we got different results" or something like that and instantly every GM fan in the country is laughing hysterically. Not good. Not taking anything away from the F-150, but two dozers of that size would make short work of that truck if they'd let it.
Your right, thats why I'd like to see like 6 dozers, 2 on each end of each brand, then, like after 10 seconds or so, see who sustained the most damage. I'm confident that the F-150 would come out on top.
This all actually reminds me of something that happened on the lower mainland a few months ago. A FULLSIZED dump truck with a large dump trailer was going way to fast into a corner, and rolled the trailer onto a truck. When they showed the truck, it was a 2004-'05 F-150. I could not believe how well it held up, the cab was smashed obviously, but I cant remeber if the guy was killed or not. I'm pretty sure he walked away from it with some non-life threating injuries. The frame was perfectly straight, wasnt bowed in the least bit, and it was sitting fine on all fours. I was amzed at the strength of this new truck, compared to last generation F-150. Vast improvement.
While we're at it, we should lift each brand of truck 1,000ft with a Sky Crane and drop them to see which one holds up best. It would be as pointless as a dozer on each end of a truck and letting them go full bore. I'm not picking on you Nick, but when you said put a dozer on each end and let them get after it, it made for a great visual, made me laugh. I'd love to see it.
The amount of time that the dozers were on the F150 was designed to represent an accident. This shows how well the truck will stand up under this type of pressure. In most accidents there is an instant moment of pressure, not 10 seconds. I think for most people the ad is very effective.
I know, I think it would be pretty cool to see tho, even if it was pointless. The ad we are talking about did have a point, if you cant see it, then fine.
