I have a 1997 Explorer 4wd with a 4.0 liter engine. Does anyone know if there are any diagrams with step-by-step instructions for the back-yard mechanic?
I need to change a boot on the passengers side. Also there has been a vibration start lately at about 40 klms/hr and up when you accelerate. As soon as you let off on the gas it stops. Doesn't seem to be in the engine but maybe a cv joint? This boot has only been recently damaged when I lost a flashlight in there and it ripped the boot(ah-hem).
Haynes manuals are available at most auto parts stores; they have step by step instructions with limited diagrams.
alldatadiy.com also has step by step with diagrams. All Data DIY is a service you must pay an annual subscription to to access.
If the CV joint is bad, the Haynes manual claims they are not serviceable and a new half axle must be purchased. Your symptoms point to a CV joint, but could also be bearings.
I just helped a friend replace the CV boots on his 96 Camry. He got split boots from Kragen. Worked out real nice, you just screw the 2 halves together over the joint.
From what LVDan sez this might not be available for yours, but worth a call to Kragen or Autozone.
The split boots offer a convenient way to replace a boot without taking the half axle out and dismantling the CV joint, but they have problems. They never seal right so they leak grease and allow dirt and water in. The CV joint will have a shorter life span. Also, the centripital forces cause the heavy joint to distort the boot, shortening the life of the boot as well.
So I don't really recommend the split boot unless you need a short time fix or don't have the ability (or money) to remove the axle.
