Well today I thought I would have a new exhaust system made for my truck (5.4 SD) so I had them chop off my great sounding dual exhaust (dual 3in. with 40 series Flowmaster, running no cat) and install a single 3in. strait pipe (no cat or muffler) it is the most horiable sounding truck I have ever heard, it is unreal how loud it is, I just wanted a clean\single exhaust and the flowmaster made way to much interior noise. This exhaust is the most poppy\crackly exhaust you have ever heard. If you ever thought of doing this to your truck don't! My buddy works at a exhaust shop and this didn't cost me much at all, guess I am going to look for a cat back system to install on it now, taking the big cat off was a great improvenent, but going with no muffler was a big no no. Let this be a free leson to you guys, I have tryed dual 3in. with a Y-pipe running the cat, dual 3in. with a 40 series Flowmaster and a cat, and dual 3in. with a 40 series Flowmaster and no cat, the last one was the only one that really sounded good, but I went way backwards today

Personally, I love the way they sound straight piped. A truck can't be too loud, and the poppy/crackly sound gives me cold chills everytime I hear it. The only thing I would have done different would be instead of a single pipe, I would be running dual exhaust. If you like a LOUD truck go for it, if not you had better keep a muffler on it.
This sounds like my youth (many, many, many years ago). We ran straight pipes on our cars, but did it with "lake pipes", or cut-out controls, so we could quiet them down when we needed to. Unless you drive only in unpopulated areas, or areas with no police force, you're asking for a ticket by running straight pipes all the time.
well, i too have tried several different setups on my 99f250sd, 5.4L. I CANNOT GET HAPPY WITH HOW THESE ENGINE SOUND !!! first, i just tried to bypass the stock muffler, no good. then, i put a flowmaster 40, single in, dual out 2 1/4", in the stock mufflers place, dumped right b4 the axle.... way too quite ! so, then i cut the cat out, bypassed it and left the flowie dumped where it was..... still not what i wanted. so, now i had tail pipes put in from the flowie, and have 3.5" x 15 inch stainless tips on.... it is a lot better, but still a little too quiet. im sure it sounds good to someone standing outside, but in the cab, i can still hear the damn engine..... any ideas? i thought about just cutting out the flowie and running a y pipe in its place.. basically running no cat, just two echo tips.... i had a dodge like that which sounded awesome ! what should i do ??
Matt if you are running no cat with a flowmaster and duals you must be hearing it inside, I like to be able to hear my exhaust but mine gets old after the first 5min. I like strait pipes, every diesel should come stock with them, but some gas motors just wern't made for them, this being one of them! I am going to order a cat-back system and be done with it....
yeah, im not too sure if i like the fact that these engines just sound "different".... but ow well, i think ill just keep mine the way it is... afterall it is a lot better than before, plus im tired of spending the money and all.......
