Hooked up the boost gauge and dial is jumping around alot. A read that if you tap direct into the manifold you will not get the vibration. Is there any other way to keep this from happening besides tapping direct ? Also I am seeing about 23 PSI max boost with the hammer down. Is this where I should be ?
Do a search for gauge install or look in the tech folder. I know this has been previously discussed at length, although it's been a while, and there is one particular place where you don't get that--I think the throttle body elbow like you said is the best place--probably the most accurate anyway.
acurate readings are pretty necessary, and the only way to really know what the press in the manifold is to tap into it there. drill and tap the aluminum elbow
The elbow he is refering to is the metal elbow on top of your "throttle" body after the hose comes out of the (duh--just went out to look under the hood of my truck and remembered it's got the motor out ) intercooler and goes into the motor. Open the hood and you can easily touch it. Easy to unbolt and swing out of the way without even taking the hose off. If you have an 04 with the throttle plate you can remove it too as it's useless--just be careful to not drop the little screws into the intake. It's aluminum drill and tap carefully--it's fairly thin and soft.
the reason your guage "jumps around alot is that there is not enough dampening in it, you need to put a needle valve or orfice in it to slow the pulsations. changing the location of the tap may help also.
I am going to tap direct to the elbow to eliminate the vibration. I am also going to change the crap 1/8" hose that came with the gauge. I am pretty sure the hose is leaking at the compression connectors. I purchased some reinforcing inserts to install at the ends of the hose to keep the plastic from collapsing when I tightened up on the nut but they don't fit inside the hose that came with the gauge.
unless u have a chip, u have a problem. either with ur gauge, or the variable in the turbine
Hey, Bighoss Do you think that the '05's are different?
There is another guy on this board that thinks there is something wrong with my '03 because it only runs 35-36 maxed out on the HP tune. I can assure everybody there is nothing wrong with mine.
I've never seen more than 30 PSI on my '04 with any of the Predator tunes. Only goes above 27 under what must be very unique conditions.
Needle flutter can be a result of inadequate damping, as Crash687 mentioned. I did not experience flutter, but I did have a buzzing noise from the boost guage at medium throttle and 12 - 18 lb. boost. I fixed mine by installing an orifice with a number #80 hole in it. Quieted the guage down, and had no noticeable effect on the reaction time of the boost guage.
