I would recommend it for everyone that has a wastegate. PSD's prior to 99 (94-97) and vans have non-wastegated turbo's.
Steve_250. I would have to say no, it's not feasable. The wastegate is positioned in such a way that the exhaust is always pushing against it, only spring pressure holds it shut. It has nothng to do with the MAP. Look at the top of the turbo towards the drivers side, there is a little gold cannister (wastegate actuator) with a small red pressure line hooked to it. Remove the line from the actuator and push the boot on the line down on one of the intercooler tube hose clamp studs.....then take it for a test drive cause you're done.
to be honest, unplugging the wastegate doesn't do much as far as horsepower, TQ and fuel mileage are concerned. I only noticed about 3 extra lbs boost in the midrange and at max. As far as EGTs are concerned, i didn't really noticed any changes in either direction. Lets not forget that the amount of power a diesel produces is related to the amount of diesel shot into the cylinder. Unplugging the wastegate doesn't add any extra fuel, you are just adding a little extra air to help burn the existing fuel completely. Mine is unplugged because i think my truck smokes (black) just a little bit less when towing and downshifting out of OD. As far as overboosting, that depends on wiether or not your truck is chipped/programmed/ICP resistor mods have been done to your truck. If your truck is stock then no extra fuel and no way to overboost engine. If your ride is power enhanced, well then that is another story.
that's strange... but ok i guess... i did notice a difference in my mule... not any more power or torque, just a little quicker on the pickup... people here say the same thing when they upgrade intake or exhaust... i think all these upgrades help to get more air into and out of the engine easier.. so that makes the mule quicker... just my 02...
so...i'm running an early 99 sd. got a preditor programmer on it set at the 60hp tune..any issue with unhooking the red hose on my truck? any potentail problems? Any thing to watch out for? Thanks for your time.
I unpluged the red hose from the wastegate and plugged it off yesterday & i noticed that the truck seemed to be a bit quicker. I also filled up @ 2.04 per gal & will check the fuel mileage to see if any difference.. I really don't think i should see any... Thanks..
Wow, 2.04 a gallon, I just paid 2.41.
Oldsled, shouldn't be a problem with plugging it. If it becomes a problem just hook it back up.
So far no difference with fuel economy, not looking to see any. The easiest mod I've seen for power (IMO) is the diy Tymar, the NAPA 6637 filter. I gained 1.7 mpg too.
However, I do hear a louder hiss from the wastegate when I come up off the throttle.
Stock turbo can handle upto 25lbs boost, more than 25 the turbo becomes inefficient because it is spinning too fast. Some where between 22-25lbs the PCM will start to defuel the engine and temporarily illuminate the check engine light. That’s why people sell the boost relief valves, so the MAP sensor and computer don’t see more than say 23lbs when in reality you are pushing north of 25lbs. Some people claim that the head gaskets on the 7.3L can handle upto 40lbs for short periods and that more than 25lbs doesn’t hurt the turbo, others say differently. If you want to make monster boost or make 25+lbs more safely, may I suggest a ball bearing turbo. You will get a more responsive turbo, less backpressure and lower EGTs while making monster boost.
steve_250 thanks for the input. I just called my local NAPA and will pick up the 6637 filter in the AM. I have read some really good things about KWIK's DIY Filter & will perform the change once I get it. I hope I'm right on the orginator..Will let you know the outcome.
