Hey everyone...I have a '79 F-150 with a 300ci six and SROD, and it can't get out of its own way. I suspect it's the rear ratio that's killing me. I checked the tag, and apparently it's a 2.75. I don't need a lot of power out of the thing, but I'm tired of being the slowest thing on the road. I can barely use the OD! would going to a slightly numerically higher ratio like 3.08 or 3.25 solve this? or do i need to go to 3.50?
Second, how hard is it to swap the gears by myself? I've never done rear work, but i'm fairly competent with my tools. Should I replace the carrier, or just look for a ring and pinion? Or just find a complete axle at a junkyard (which is where I'd be getting any of these parts)?
lots of existing threads on this topic.
1st, play with a ratio calculaotr ro see what RPMS different rations will put you at. http://www.dfw-tx4wd.org/gears.html
You can regear it yourself if you take your time, and learn how. Also, buying a junkyard 3rd member isnt a bad idea. 3.50's are real common.
