ok i am searching for a tranny for my 93 f150 5.ol automatic i beleive it is the e40d tranny but i was wondering what vehicles that this tranney came in and what i should be looking for on the door sticker too also if i could find a standard tranny i would need the computer too if i did this how much more work is this going to be? i am going to swap the tranny with my dad he has alot of knowledge and experience?
The E4OD was mainly the heavy-duty auto tranny with overdrive, so it was mostly in F250s and F350s. It also came in F150s with 5.8L engines in the early 90's, but I don't recall when they dropped the AOD for the E4OD on 5.0 F150s. There are a couple of different ways to tell if you have an E4OD: 1. axle code on door sticker is 'E'. 2. Overdrive button on dash (for '87-'91), or OD button on shift lever for '92-up. 3. Shift pattern is P R N OD 2 1 vs. P R N OD D 1 for an AOD or P R N D 2 1 for a C6. 4. A wiring harness to the tranny, other than the neutral safety switch, which is the only electrical item on an AOD (don't know on C6, but it's not an electronically-controlled tranny).
If you do indeed have the E4OD, you'll want to look for later versions if possible, say '95 and up, as there were some upgrades that made it a more solid tranny in later years. Earlier ones MAY only have the upgrades if they have been rebuilt.
All that said, I have a sneaking suspicion you have an AOD in your truck (your tranny pan would say Automatic Overdrive and METRIC on the bottom, and the tranny code on the door sticker would be 'A').
yeah i have the overdrive button on the shifter and it goes pRNOD21 so i do have a E40d right so look on the door for an E under axle also would it be possible to find it on an 1988 f250 i didnt see the overdrive button on the shifter?
That '88 F250 doesn't have an E4OD, since it didn't come out until the '89 model year. I also mis-typed in my previous post--I meant to say "TRANS CODE" instead of "axle code". Sorry about that.
