renoduckman - On my 88' there was a tag on the driver's side of my trans about in the middle of the trans. Mine was a Mazda 5sp, I don't know about autos. If you have a Mitsu trans it should have a removavle bell housing and a tag that says like FM146 or something like that. The Mazda is all 1 piece with a sticker that says E87A FE. I think the door stickers are useless.

erik7798 - What are the specifics of the truck? Just the year does not help much. It sounds like you are talking about an auto trans....... not sure. Reguardless of the type of trans, if you have not flushed/changed the fluid for a long time I would start there, as well as inspect for leaks while you are under there, or have a shop do it for you.

My truck is an 87 ranger 4x4 with 5 speed stick. It has 2.3L and standard cab.199k and the only problem has been the module on the distrubtor.I can find a metal tag on the transfer case and the rear end but not the tranny.
thanks

Code D was Ford's "catch-all" code for BOTH the Mitsubishi and Mazda 5-speed manual gearboxes with overdrive. The Mitsubishi was used in 4X4's exclusively; the Mazda and Mitsubishi units were used in 4X2's. If it is a Mitsubishi unit, it will have a decal on the DRIVER'S SIDE reading FM146, FM 145, or FM 132. Too, the bellhousing on the Mitsubishi unit is removable; the bellhousing of the Mazda unit is integral. Further, the Mitsubishi unit has a casting web also shaped rather like a V lying on its side with the wide part of the V facing the engine.

Mitsubishi transmissions take gear oil; Mazda units take ATF for lubrication.

Ford also used codes 5 and M for both of these transmissions, by the way. The Ranger is the only vehicle of which I am aware that Ford did code in this manner--except for a few Explorers.

If you have the Mazda transmission, try to be careful with it for it is not nearly as stout as is the Mitsubishi gear box! I have seen quite a number of them ruined or damaged pretty badly by guys trying to use them and shift them as if they were 3.03 three-speeds or T&C Toploaders!
