We got our rottie from a rottweiler rescue her in town - she had a sad life before us and we are trying to change that. She LOVES going for rides. Can't stand to see us leave without her. I keep telling people I am going to train her to eat bad computer users and bring her on as another I.T. person here at work.

Bet they'd remember those settings with her breathing down their neck.

Zellie, our 5 month old Doberman/Standard poodle (Doberdoodle? Pooderman?)...yes, you read that right...loves to ride in the F-150 supercab or the Lincoln TC, inside on both. Preferably stretched across the big old bench seat in the TC

She either sits or sleeps on the other truck front seat or sits in the jump or back seat and licks my toddler. Will also sleep on the truck floor behind the front seats.

California requires a dog in the open bed to be on a tether that'll keep her inside the bed. Sooner or later I'll train her to that and/or just using the tied down crate in the bed, or break down and get a camper shell. Right now she's too hyper to trust her back there. But she's gonna be a big 'un, and will likely end up in the back.

Both my dacshunds ride on the seat next to me.. They like to look out the window...
I hate to see animals, ie dogs, in the back of an open bed truck without any kind of support/secure system..in case of an incident. Not safe for the pets, imo.

My Shepherd will stay in the back of the truck. I can even go eat or shopping and not worry about him , except that somebody might steal him. he's a very friendly sort. Anybody that knows dogs, could tell he's no danger to them. Fortunately, I think it would be the non-dog people that would try something as cruel as stealing a dog, and to those folks he probably looks like Cujo (Kujo?).

Anyway, Unless he was harnessed in some way, I don't think a dog is much safer in the cab than in the bed. maybe a little safer, but with the way most of your dogs ride, unharnessed and looking out a half open window, a wreck could wreak havoc on those in the cab as well.

but like I said above, I do it because he likes it so much.

Agreed with gtex! I've been lectured several times by complete strangers about letting my dog ride in the bed. I'm not saying it's completely safe, but the only thing safer would be to leave him at home, and he'd hate that. He was trained as a pup to ride in the bed in the safest way (no jumping out unless told to, no standing on the side rails, etc) and he does occasionally do something stupid, like sleeping on the toolbox, but I'm not going to keep him away from all the fun in life just because there's a risk of injury. He's a cow dog, risk is what he lives for! Besides, he always looks a little bit embarrassed when I make him ride in the cab.

I can't believe your pooch would fall asleep on the tool-box. but then again, K.C will take a nap on ocassion after a good outing and a long drive. But, the project doesn't have a tool-box....

My Akita/Chow mix " Scrappy " chooses to ride in the back seat of my truck. He doesn't even visit the front seat. Don't know why he just loves to sit in the back like he is being chauffered.

If you love your dog, NEVER leave it free in the bed or tied in there. Even a 5 mph rear ending is enough to get it killed. Imagine having that kind of jolt on your neck or flying out of the bed into traffic. Just a fall can do serious damage. Get a crate large enough for it to fit the dog and cut holes for tie downs in the corners, at least it will have a fighting chance if you have an accident. The crate will provide some protection even if it flies out of the truck. Be creative, it will do your dog a world of good and still have fun on a road trip.

my lab jake rides shotgun, most of the time with his head out the window. and a word of caution to early 90's buick lasabre owners with power windows, i drove my gradmas old car and the button for the window is right on the arm rest were he puts his feet to stick his head out the window he stood on the button and the window rolled up and caught his head, never heard my dog yelp like that.

When I had my Boxer, he would ride in the back of the truck. Went to the Burger King drive thru and he bailed out and ran inside while a lady opened the door for her kids. From that day on, he didn't get to go to town with me very much more. If he did go to town with me, I made sure I didn't stop anywhere close to that Burger King.
