I did mine this weekend. Did they switch upper hose's by 2003? My 01 had the through the belt upper radiator hose that had to be removed to change the serp belt. If you do have that style I would recomend getting the behind the belt hose and change it over. Nothing really difficult, just use a 1/2 ratchet or breaker bar for the tensioner, it just go's into the tensioner pully like you were putting it in a socket, there should be sticker on the header panel with how its routed if you forget which pully went were.
Nope, the upper hose still goes through the belt. Brilliant designers <sheesh>.
I would like to get the other belt but I don't know if it will fit, I have the dieselsite coolant filter mounted.
I found the routing sticker, it was the one right in front of my face! Odd though, it's mounted by the driver side battery.
I got the different upper hose at napa, just tell them you want the one that goes behind the serpentine belt, I think it was only $10. Much easier to do it now that have to mess with it if the belt breaks and leaves you on the side of the road.
to answer about the belt change interval i am sure that there are mileage intervals to change it but in my repair shop we replace it when it has cracks in the ribs. the recommended number is 6 cracks per inch but if i see any i resommend to replace it. as long as it isn't cracked or make noise i would leave it. though a spare belt is a good idea to keep in th truck so maybe replace it and put the old one in the cab as a spare.
I recently changed the belt on my '97. I don't have the hose routing problem but the belt started to fray at the edges at 57,000 miles. I've always heard that 60,000 miles was the magic number. In my case, I guess it's true. The old one is now a spare.
