Installing 351W EFI
Ok, This pig has the 5.8 H.O. with a gas guzzling 4 barrel carb. I have an open loop Holley 650 throttle body add-on, but I understand that 86 also came out with EFI. Is it possible to steal the EFI out of another 86, computer and all, and install it on my newly rebuilt, still on the stand 351W? I would need to find someone with the manifold, computer, and wiring, install the electric fuel pump, regulator, etc, but what else?
Or take a wing at the Holley throttle body?
Or just get the ol gas pumper rebuilt?
(I look forward to a little better gas mileage and maybe once in my life passing the smog test)
I have never done that but dealing with the EFI on my 86 F150 makes me beleive that the Holly set up is gonna be a lot simpler and probably cheaper in the long run, those damned tank fuel pumps and sending units run about 100 to 150 and the inline fuel pump is 200 from napa.
'88 was the first year of efi on the 351. Ford used the Ho version in 86 and then in 87 again. If you plan on doing any major mods to the insides of the 351. Get a MA efi kit off a 94-newer. The first efi's on the 88-93 had a SD system which isn't great. I wouldn't imagine a SD efi getting much better than a holley 4180 equipped 351.
Ouch, didn't realize the pumps/filters were so much. I still wonder if the Holley 650 throttle body fuel injector is worth the $200 I spent on it, but I don't want to tear everything up to find out.
I really wish I could find someone who's done the swap.......

I was thinking about "in tank" pumps to cure my rear tank problem, found out you have to change the tank also....My quote was $250ea. w/ used pumps, I'll live with the rear problem....
When I tell auto parts people about what I've done (300/6 to 302) the first thing they say is, "hope you used a carb." or "if you did the FI, you'd be out another $2000." I went with a new 625 AFB and beat a 95 Acura just before me in the smog test......
I'd go with the Pro-Jection Holley being you have it allready. It only requires a TBI specific 15lb. pressure, inline fuel pump for fuel delivery. The rest is easy as cake mix. The Pro-Jection computer is adjustable in six or seven areas from what I remember,so it is something to think about over a retrofit to speed density or mass air as far as simplicity. It also works with stock DuraSpark ignitions also.
