motor oil

I have a 96' F150 4x4 with 57000 miles. I like to go off roading every now and then.(Three or four times a month) I am thinking of switching from the standard 10-30 motor oil to a 4x4 synthetic blend. Is this going to make a difference(help or hurt) in engine performance and life?

While I am not an expert, I understand that synthetic oil's multi-viscosity characteristic holds won't break down under extreme conditions. Also polymers used for multi-viscosity in regular oil don't help lubricate, whereas synthetic dosent need much (if any) such polymers. Synthetic is supposed to better handle contaminants too, but I would be leary of extending oil change intervals much. On my 95 F150, 300 I6, I bought with 58000 miles, my mechanic recommended a blend of synthetic/regular oil as pure synthetic can leak in older engines because it flows better. The blend is the best of both worlds as it is not nearly as expensive so you won't be tempted to run it too many miles. Also, I always run a quart of Rislone.
