i need some advice from those in the know... my mom took delivery of a freestar about two weeks ago. yesterday the salesman calls to tell her she got a $1000 rebate she wasn't supposed to get and he wants cash or to rewrite the contract. she has already received a payoff from fmcc and is getting the check to pay it off...what do you guys think??? I fell like she has a contract and they should honor it.
Thanks
What they said. Also, I wonder what would happen if they "forgot" to tell your mom about a rebate when she took delivery. I doubt they would call her two weeks later and say, hey we are sending you a check for $1000. Once the purchase agreement is signed and the car is delivered, it is all done for both sides.
Car guy checking in here....was that $1000 FMCC bonus cash? If she took the subvented financing, Ford Motor Credit might have something to say about that. I'm just asking because the FMC contract is always written "subject to lenders approval." We need a clarification of what the rebate was- if it was consumer cash, the dealer's out to lunch. If it's FMCC cash, Ford Credit will just kick the contract back.
I hope Jeff weighs in here.
edit: two weeks later??Are these guys asleep?

he told her she was only supposed to get the rebate if she traded in a minivan for a minivan, which she didn't do she traded in a tauras.....this seems very strange to me, we have bought at least 8 vehicles from this salesman in the last 10 years and never had anything like this happen.
polarbear: no it wasn't the fmcc bonus cash and yes i believe someone was asleep at the switch or keyboard

This gets stranger with each post. Ford has "conquest" rebates, where you get $ because you own a competing vehicle (you're on a list for owning a Grand Caravan, so you get an extra rebate towards a Freestar, for example). You get that rebate for OWNING the vehicle, Ford never requires that you trade it in (you just provide proof that you own the vehicle).
If it's an FMCC rebate, then the dealer would have to prove that they were somehow defrauded before they can legally come after your mother for the $1000. Now, if it was just an honest mistake that your mother wound up benefitting from when she shouldn't have, then let your conscience be your guide.
Thank You for all of the info. I don't think she is getting the full story from the dealer and as others have said would they call two weeks later to give her the $1000. i doubt it. a friend at fmc is going to look into the whole deal.
