Ford 9inch Reseal

Anyone redone the seal on the differential? How do I go about it? Does the Yoke have to come off, and if so what do I need to get it off? I know there is a forum for axles but nobody is responding, as usual.

Let me throw you a bone here...Those with more indepth knowledge please reply accordingly. Yes the yoke as you call it or 3rd member as I believe it's called has to be removed. Then you can separate the two halves of the pumpkin and replace the gasket. You probably have to diconect the driveshaft as well. Hop this helps.

If its the pinion seal, disconnect the driveshaft, pull the yoke off and put the new seal in. Nows the time to check for bearing wear. There is an o-ring around the pinion support, so if its leaking out of that place, disconnect the driveshaft, and pull the pinion support out. If its the gasket around the 3rd member, pull the axles, drop the driveshaft and pull it out. Clean, and put a new gasket/RTV around it and seal it back up. That would also be a good time to check for carrier bearing wear.

ok I unbolted all the nutes on the outer ring where the seal will go and I popped it open. But I can't get it off, it comes out about 3/8" of an inch and then stops. Whats going on?

Which part are you removing? The pinion support (5 3/8" bolts), or the 3rd member (10 3/8" nuts)? If its the former, give the pinion a spin and it should help push it out, although if you have it out 3/8" , it should just slide out real easy. If its the 3rd member you're removing, you did remember to pull the axles, right? Thats the only thing I can really see holding it back at that distance, unless you have it cocked on the studs.

I haven't pulled the axles, how do I do that? Sorry for the ignorance but I've never dived into a axle before.

be careful when you pull it out, it is very heavy! I got a floor jack under mine to help support it.

Yep, found that same article on the web somewhere else, same pics. I have the axles pulled out and the differential out. Anyone have a slick way of removing the gaskets? I'm gonna use one of those scotch brite disks for steel, but if anyone has a better method I am all ears.

John

ps I looked at the oil pan, there are NO metal flakes what so ever. Yay.

I used a razor blade scraper to get the last bits of gasket off.

Question

Ok, I pulled the diferential out and the axles, cleaned everything on the mating sufarces and put the differential back in and bolted it down. Next I put the two axle halves in. After snugging the 4 nuts on both sides I noticed that both sides have some in to out play, a guess is somewhere near 1/4". What gives?
