i got a 352 in my 66. it hasnt run for quite a few years and i plan on turning the truck into a huge off-road rig with 46. should i push the engine to the limit or what size motor should i use?
1. How much money do you want to spend?
2. Do you want to burn pump gas?
3. Are you doing any sort of competition, which would have rules to limit anything?
4. Are you concerned with street drivability?
5. What kind of transmission are you running?
Basically it goes like this: Good, fast, cheap. Pick any two.
The more detail you give on what you want, the better my recommendation will be.
Ok fine, but the moderators might frown upon it. More users will look at your question if it's listed in the topic list.
Now that we've established that there are rules to contend with, what are they, in relation to the engine?
It seems you've chose "good" and "fast". Very well.
Just as soon as you tell me what the engine rules are, I'll get on recommending a build. The FE will work great, no need to change out to a 460. It'll just make you sink/roll/fall off faster.

Take the 352 and have it bored +.050. Drop in a 428 crank with the low compression 390 pistons and build a 410, with a 941 crane cam and adjustable valvetrain. I think you may need a few $$$ adapter to get the tranny hooked up, if possible. Set of gears around the 4.56 or 5.11 range and you should be set. Also set aside around $3000 for the motor and $3000 for the other items, that should get you in the dirt
On ebay there is a dual 4 intake for the fe and someone else has a set of 5.56 gears!!
Buy those and about 15" of lift along with Mike's suggestions and you'll have some thing to please the crowds!! Wheelies, endo's, snapped u-joints, mud in the intake....oh the fun!

HA! Aint that the damn truth. Do yerself a favor and swap all U-joints to the same size. That way you just carry a couple of the same size in your glovebox with your 1/2" wrench.
And once you get good at snappin' em, you can walk into your local NAPA and they'll have a couple waiting for you.
