Ford 9 Upgrade Questions

Well i have a Jeep Cherokee and i picked up a used Ford 9 from a junk yard the other day. my question is how hard would it be to upgrade to like a 33 or 35 spline and what would i have to do. I kknow that i would have to get new axle ahafts and new carrier. which i plan on putting a spool in it. so all i would proably need to do is change the bearings, right? Well hope to get some responses back even though i own a jeep.

cherokeeman, the 33 spline shafts are really not that much stronger than 31 spline shafts and not worth the cost of swapping in my opinion. The 35 spline are good, but why do you need these? I've seen trucks with completely stock 9 inches with 44 inch tires at the mud bogs without breaking anything. As long as your running less than 350 hp and under 39 in tires you should be fine. If your axle is from a early bronco you might have 28 splines in which I would just swap to 31's and if you break axleshafts put in some moser or warn shafts. These axles are pretty strong by design. If you do go with the 35 spline shafts you'll need new bearings and they do make a 35 spline spool also.

Well, I haven't really figured out what fords method was of using big and small bearings, but I've seen 3 different kinds/sizes. But there may be even more, that is just what I have seen on trucks I've owned in the past. All of mine have worked great and I'm usually way behing on maintenance. I wouldn't worry about which kind you have, just repack them if they're in good shape and they should be fine.
