Hey I just got a carb rebuild kit, well it says "tune up kit" on it, are these the same things?? is it easy to do? is it even worth it? ive got a crappy motorcraft 4 barrel
The name is not important, it is what the kit contains. There should be a float valve, accelerator pump plunger or diaphragm and power valve, if it has one, and all of the gaskets, as well as instructions and a cardboard tool to set float level. I am not familiar with Motorcraft carbs specifically, so this is general information.
Rule #1, dont adjust anything if it has the factory settings and no one else has tried to "adjust" (messed with) it before. Use a factory service manual if you have to adjust anything because someone else messed with it.
I do not use carb cleaner chemicals anymore. I find that laquer thinner works much better. All rubber, leather and plastic parts need to be removed first. While carb cleaner is non-flammable, it is much more toxic and tends to leave a residue.
Only while rebuilding with all the rubber things out, I use brake cleaner. It works better then carb cleaner. Probably the same, easy to do, usually worth it even if it picks up only 1 mpg. If it is well worn, a rebuild will usually net 2+ mpg as long as you follow with a good tuneup including adjusting the carb for vacuum.
