I was wondering how much it would cost to swap out my 300 for a 351w? Also is a motor from a junkyard any better or worse than a rebuilt one from lets say napa, is there any other options for me to buy a motor? I am on limited funds so I would not really like to go over $1200. Is there real noticeable power gains from a 351w over my 300? I would really like the V8 rumble though.
I performed this swap in my 89 F-150. I purchased the 351 complete from oil pan to valve covers and all the serpentine accessories minus the fuel injection stuff for $750. The engine had 130,000 miles on it and looked good on the inside and could have lasted several thousand more miles but I wanted to HI-Po it a little. You will just have to check your local junkyard. Don't forget to figure in as many small items as you can think of then add about 50% for the stuff you can't think of.
Good Luck,
DannyP
If you buy a rebuilt long block, you can figure on $2500-$3000 for the swap if you do the work yourself. If you can find an engine like Danny P. for $750 with everything on it, then you got a shot. If I had to do it over again, I would either get a crate engine, or buy one like Danny P. If you can get an engine for $750, you can probalby do the rings and bearings and some machining work on the block for around $500-$600 and have a nice solid engine.
The V-8 will make a world of difference over the 6. You may miss a little of the torque, but the power when you hit the gas will make you grin from ear to ear!!
I'm performing a swap from a 302 to 351 in my '90 F-150. I bought a complete engine for only $150. Machine shop work + rebuild parts are costing me $600-$700. add to that the cam, intake, carb, and exauhst. I'm hoping to get by at under $1500.
