Like Deckedout said. It's became too much like professional wrestling, all about entertainment. Big money and bigger personalities. Heck, Hendrick and Rousch own fourteen race teams between them! That amounts to a third of the running field. Just a bunch of rich guys that found something else to do besides golf on Sunday's. I miss the stock days. That's when the talent for building, driving and determination really decided the winner.
I think the best solution would be to limit them to stock production blocks, rods, crank, block, and heads. Made in quantities greater than 10,000 to prevent specialty factory stuff. That'd slow 'em down.
I think Danko touched on your original sentiment, with the post about 429 Torino Talladegas and Hemi Daytonas. Back then, there was still such a thing as "homolagation" in NASCAR. Yes, NASCAR would be much more exciting, if they were able to get the speeds they do, today, with parts that are available over the counter, or the same cars that anybody could buy from a dealer's lot...the latter being the essence of homolagation. If at least 100 ain't available to the general public, it don't get raced.
The idea behind the stock block, rods, crank, and heads, was to slow them down without usage of a restrictor plate. As far as I'm concerned, the rest of the sport can stay the same. Think the stock 351 rods can handle the 600+ hp and 8000+ rpm's they're turning? Not for long they cant! So it'd take some creativity to be competitive. So if one team wants to "push the envelope" and go faster than the others, then so be it. They'll just have to risk blowing an engine. If one make is crying because their rods or crank or whatever is weaker, tough! Find a different stock part to use, or go back to the factory and beg for them to develop something better. I just think it'd make it much more interesting. Nascar teams crawling through junkyards and whatnot. And raise the cubic inch limit too, to include some different engines.
And like I said, make 'em use stuff that was made in quantities greater than 10,000 (or other more realistic number, higher or lower). That would make it better for us, the consumers, as we would see a benefit from racing technology. It would also keep "special" factory stuff from being used.

It would take weeks to run a five hundred mile race... There is no way that a stock set of 351W rods, crank, and pistons will take more than about 450 horses / 5500 RPM, and only for a short time.
If you don't like it, quit whining, don't watch. Its not that difficult.
Well... then maybe they wouldn't be using a 351w, would they?
Edit: I never said I didn't like it, I just would like to see it more interesting. I'll still watch it. Strange thing is, whenever I watch it, a Chevy wins, and when I dont watch it, a Ford wins. This has happened so far this whole season, and part of last season. Strange. Maybe I need to quit watching it?

Stock would not be limited to 5.7 liters. Run wutcha brung as long as the wheelbase, weight and safety issues are satisfied. Worked fine 40 years ago w/o restrictor plates.
Way more people died 40 years ago... hey I like death and destruction as much as the next guy, but there is a limit.
Rusty, i didn't mean you specifically, just people that whine too much... I like Nascar, There is a lot of real competition.... and Jeff Gordon, Jimmy Johnson, and that dale guy don't win every weekend, the last two years have been ford championships....

Definately agreed. That's why we need to slow 'em down. I'm not saying go buy cars off the dealer lots and race 'em; we'll never be there again. Too many safety advancements have been made, and that I totally agree with. Death and destruction of ENGINES is ok and interesting to watch, but NOT the people operating those engines! Just something resembling a stock engine like I've been talking about, to slow 'em down. Take a look at what I didn't say, I said nothing of pistons, head porting, intake manifolds, carburetors / injection... With the appropriate combo of stock stuff I think they could still go reasonably fast.
Here's a possible combo I could think of that would propel them ok and still meet the requirements I proposed:
Ford 390
Stock early heads, CJ valves, ported <-- Individual teams could get creative here
12:1 compression
Stock crank, block, rods, lemans rods if rules allow
Large-ish roller cam, valvetrain upgrades
And you're looking at upwards of 650hp, at about 7000rpm, according to Desktop Dyno anyway. I dont think that'd take a week to complete the race, but it would slow 'em down to a safe(r) level. And I'm sure the same process could work on a more recent motor.
