I have the small Maglite two AA size. Works great has the adjustable focus and it is under $10. Comes with a sheath, which allows me to carry it on my belt any time I want.

Check out a sporting goods store like Cabella's or Bas Pro shops, maybe some firearm shops. Most of the LED flashlights I have seen are good for close up work but they do not focus well for a "beam" effect. To get enough voltage you need 3 batteries although there are electronic "step up" circuits. Because of the low current draw you do not need large C or D cells so the flashlights can be small and still work well.

I carry a small LED flashlight with a lens on my keyring:

for the money this is the best flashlite you can buy. I bought one for a dollar(8-months ago) and could not be happier. I have 20 bucks total with a lithium battery and shipping, but it is awesome and does much better than the high-dollar ones at cabellas. It has been abused but is still awesome. Batteries last forever. I was skeptical at first because of the cost(they have gone up) but I was more than impressed. If you aren't impressed with his, I don't know what would impress you. This is the item number if you can't get it to work 5195060845

I haven't seen one LED yet that gives a white light. They all give off a bluish light. Unless I'm not looking in the right place.

I saw a nifty one a few weeks ago, it had five (I think) leds so you could vary the intensity AND, it was powered by a hand crank generator. $30.00 Canadian. Not real intense light like a maglite but would be neat for reading or going to the outhouse at night.

Pelican SabreLite LED, uses 3 c's. Runs between $40 and $50. Lifetime warranty, warrantied against every everything except children under the age of three and bear attacks. If you think I'm kidding I'm not. That is their written warranty statement on the box. These are great lights. I carry one while working the fire department. Like it was stated LED flashlights do not throw a beam a great distance. Every other LED flashlight that I have seen has a wide beam angle. The Pelican has a much narrower beam. You will never have to buy another. I sent one back to Pelican that was partially burnt and the batteries corroded to the point that it ate the polish of the reflector. No receipt, mailed it in and within a week a new one was in my mailbox. No questions asked. Money well spent.

I use both of these and am very happy. The first one has a standard Xenon bulb on one setting or you can choose 3 or 6 LED's depending on the amount of light you need. I really like being able to choose between the 2 different light sources.

The next is a LED only but is rechargable and is great for wearing on a belt. This one is a bit expensive until you consider never replacing a battery....at least for a few years.

I have also seen a few tactical lights on ebay real cheap. I got a knurled alumnium 4 LED unit for $11 ! it shipped from Hong Kong or something but it has been a real nice unit also.

There is a nice flash from Coleman. It is about the diameter of a C cell Maglite but it has a narrower short oval shaped handle, mine is black and silver trim, maybe 6 inches long. It runs off of 4 AA batteries. I still am using the regular carbon zinc(not alkaline) cells that came with it last summer. It still puts out good light. It has 6 "white" LEDs and one small yellow one on the handle.

The 6 LEDs can be turned on in sequence by pushing the button... 1LED, 3LEDs, 6 LEDs, 1YellowLED nightlight, Off.

The flash puts out enough light to safely hike in the dark in the woods. On 6 LEDS it will illuminate things maybe 50 feet way. It does not focus but does give good light. Not sure of the life, but I think it is supposed to run for at least 10 hours on 6 LEDs and much more with 3 or 1 or nightlite.

I also own probably 6 other single and multi LED lights and two LED headlamps. The Coleman is my favorite of the bunch although the two head lamps are pretty good for walking in the dark. If someone is interested I will dig them out of my pile and describe them in more detail.

The color spectrum of most of these LED lights runs from bright blue to kind of flourescent white. None of them seem to give the correct color to things at night, especially asphalt doesn't show up well, so walking on black asphalt is actually kind of tricky.

One plus of the really blue lights is that they do penetrate glass and water surface with less reflection so you can see inside.

I have an Eddie Bauer single LED light that takes button cells. It also has a glow rod. This is really handy for a marker light. I hang it from my butt at night when I need to walk the roads. The flashing feature of this light along with the glow rod really makes me visible, "does this light make my butt look big?" Anyway, better that than getting run over by some fool who didn't see me and the dog.

For tents I use the Campglow light(bought at REI or Campmoor), It glows a nice yellow low or high and is good for tents or camp chores but not worth a darn for more than 10 feet. Runs something like 18hrs hi, 36 low.

If I could only have one light, it is the Coleman. I am still thinking of buying one of those 50 bazillion LED lights in the hopes of having a mini flood light, but not holding my breath.
Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

one word...Tektite

Check out Tektite. I've the Expedition Star Aluminum (at the time it was the highest wattage available), Expedition 1900, Trek 4, Trek 2 (2), Mark-Lite Fire Fly and their headlamp.

All made in the USA...excellent brightness and batteries last superlong.

I have another 3-LED light that runs for about 30 hrs on 3 AAA batteries. It clips on the brim of a ball cap and works great for walking at night, camping, or any hands free work at night. I replace the batteries every year just for grins since I use it so much. If I remember right I got it at Walmart. I have not seen another one like it.

All of the "white" LED lights I have seen put out a bluish light. Seems like they could mix in some more red and green to make it better.

The "Lenser" light I listed above has a built in lens that focuses the light much better than bare LED's. It is handy because it is always with me and illuminates well enough to find or work with something at night or in my storage unit. I was always forgetting to bring a flashlight with me when I visited the storage unit. The one in the glove compartment is always dead when needed.

If you are looking to replace the maglight, get a PrincetonTec Attitude. Has three blue-white leds takes four triple A batteries, which last forever. Will fit in mag lights holster. Is great for reading maps, wiring diagrahms, small print, and has enough distance to use when walking. Sold on the net and at LL Bean.

Sportsmans Guide has a good selection of LED flashlights, handheld and others. I bought a headlamp that runs on 3 AAA with seven LEDs (3 green 4 white). It works great under a car, under a car dash, or in a crawlspace where I need both hands. I get about 30 hours out of a set of batteries.

Surefire

Yeah, they're expensive, they're tactical, you can mount them on your handgun and they're almost 10 times brighter than a full size mag-lite. Can't beat the amount of light they put out - seriously. Range from $50-60 to over $100.
