i get a "growling" noise in my 2001 ranger edge 2wd , 5 sp manual. mostly when i'm in 1st or third and off the gas..i did a search ...but nothing seems to address this...is 1st and 3rd on the same shaft? some have trouble with the input shaft/bearing...but it almost sounds like the throw-out bearing...anyway to isolate these with-out pulling the tranny?
also...i'm confused on the lube for it ...atf or 90w gear lube? which synthetic would work best?
bill
maybe you have a mainshaft bearing either out or going out. When my 94 had to be rebuilt due to the rubber plugs having lost their seal it was 1st and the mainshaft that had to be replaced. Again a growl is kinda hard to understand.
I use valvoline synthetic ATF in mine and I believe ATF is standard for almost all transmissions anymore. even my 3/4T had ATF in its trans. What does your book call for?
i'll have to try the valvoline syn. ...i'm ordering a clutch,p. plate and t.o. bearing ahead of time... at 140,000 mi. it's due...then what ever parts in the tranny as needed...do the make a rebuild "kit" for a manual??
allen....it is a recent development...it actually happens when there is less stress on the eng./trans. i.e. almost at idle..at this point i'm kinda suspecting the front trans. bearing...i'm going to replace the clutch and leave extra time to change the bearing...bill
if your truck has a lot of miles on it, you might as well change the slave, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, and the pressure plate while you are in there doing the clutch.
el conquistador...i've been hearing people say to replace the slave...hate to replace somthing that ain't broke...anyway to tell if it's bad or going??
bill
a possible sign of a bad slave is having trouble shifting into gear. the only reason many people say to replace everything while you have the trans out is so you wont have to pull it again for a long time to replace something. if you do decide to change the slave, a bench bled ford slave cylinder is probably the best choice. good luck
