Is there a test I can do to tell me if I really need to replace my steering gearbox. Occasionally it pulls hard to one side or the other. There isn't much slop in the steering and the pull isn't constant, but seems worse when it's cold. What kind of price am I looking at to have this unit replaced in my 86 f250 4x4 with power steering. I here it's a pretty hefty chunck of change, but I want the thing to be safe to drive, and steering tends to help in that area!
Make sure other steering components are fine before you condem the steering box . Make sure the alignment is within specs and that the tire pressure is fine . Under what circumstances does it pull ?

It does it most when it's cold. It almost feels like the power steering over boasts it. You start to turn left or right and it wants to continue in that direction without coming back to center. You have to literally fight it back to center at times. As it's driven it improves and sometimes you don't get the condition at all. Everything seems tight. There is some play in the wheel, but not tons. No squeeling or funny noises either. I sure hate to replace the box if that's not the problem.
