So, how did your state fair? We didn't do too bad. Just a couple hundred jobs at Hill AFB, and they're closing a chemical depot.
If you are interested here is a copy of it all broken down by state.
CA is losing a good number (again) but looks like Beale was spared. I saw something about that one being on the proposed list a few weeks back. Would have really hurt the economy up there if it had closed.
Ft Monroe is the only place closing here in VA. I dodged a bullet with that one, because I was offered a job there last week, but declined. Wouldn't that be a doozy, get a job and a week later the compound closes...
I can't believe that they are closing Ellsworth AFB here in SD.
What a hit our local economy will take, as it's pretty much the only base in South Dakota, and now there will only be one base for the B1 left in the US.
This really surprises me, especially with how usefull the B1 has been in the recent conflicts.
What a disapointment.

For some reason I can't get the link, but Oklahoma's probably doing OK or it would have been all over the news the last few weeks. Maybe they'll get rid of some of the 100k square foot building that have 20 people and 10 vehicles assigned to them.
Dodged the bullet here at the base i work at, however i feel sorry for the people in the Portsmouth area as they are on the hit list and they lost Pease AFB last time they had the closings!
I thought it would be much worse than this but over all it is mostly reserve units getting the axe. Was sorry to see Ellsworth on the list. That was one of the best duty stations I was ever at. At least there is a pretty good tourist trade there.
I was kind of wondering the same thing but after looking at the list many of them don't appear to be 'major' bases - someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
here in San Antonio, they are cosing brooks city base, and re-vamping a couple others. for a city full of bases, i guess we made out pretty well. Randolph, Fort Sam, Lackland, Brooks, and WIlford Hall and Brooks Army Med CEnter. Kelly has already beena civie base for years now.
How can you close 33 major bases while the country is at war? Isn't that a first?
One reason is that many of these bases were built when the US had 10 times as many men in uniform. During WWII. I would be willing to bet many of these are already like a ghost town as space is not needed . Some years ago there were as many bases closed as are currently open. From the looks of it no one is really being cut, just moved to a duifferent base.
One surprise I saw was the Sub Base at New London, Connecticutt. I thought that was where they did all their training for submariners, both officer and enlisted.
Oh man, what a heartbreaker to see Ft. Monmouth N.J. on there. That little base was the Army's best kept secret. I liked it so much that when I came back from Iraq last year and could finally take a honeymoon, I took my wife out there and we stayed in Guest housing on base for 10 days! It's right on the coast(shore, they call it out there) And tucked into a residential township. Great fishing on those beaches. What a shame.
