I'm a 'newbie' here (5\12\05) and need some advice and Help.
I have a '91 Bronco, with the 351 Fuel Injected motor. It was a company vehicle that I drove from the day it was purchased, until I retired in June '03. The owner of the co. gave me the Bronco as a retirement gift (and I thought they liked me).
The Bronco has 393K miles on it, and I'm leaving on a trip to Arkansas next week (5\18). I'm going to do a mini-tune-up on it this weekend, including;...rotor..dist.cap....plugs...plug wires...air cleaner (any other suggestions???).
I want to clean the air-intake 'HORN' (is that the correct term?) on top of the manifold. Do I use...Brake Clean....Injector Cleaner...Paint Thinner....???..or what?? I don't have a parts washer here in my shop, but have access to one.
Any HELP or suggestions are appreciated.....Thnx in advance...
welcome to the forums...by "horn" I think you mean the upper intake manifiold. You should use throttle body cleaner on the TB and you can run this stuff called Seafoam through the brake booster line which will clean the rest of the manifold and the valves. Hope this helps...I'm sure someone else will chime in with tips and tricks.
Thnx for the quick reply, 9599. Yea, the "Horn" is the upper part of the manifold that I'm talking about. When you say to use the Seafoam on the brake-booster line, I'm assuming you're talkin' about the rubber-vacum-line coming off the booster..???? If that's true, then I also have to assume you mean spray the Seafoam in the vacum line while the engine is running..???
yeah...seafoam comes in a can....you can pour half a can into a cup and with one line removed off the vacuum tree...suck the fluid through the hose with the engine running...let sit a few minutes then start and watch all the smoke come out your exhaust. It's kinda fun to drive down the street billowing white smoke out of your car...smoking up the neighborhood...at least it's fun when you know nothing is wrong
Seafoam is available in both aerosol and regular pour it cans for $5 + -. With the engine warmed up remove the vacuum hose from your power brake booster and allow the engine to ingest about half the can of Seafoam. I find that if you tilt the can just enough the vacuum suction from the hose will suck it in. Shut the engine off and let ti "soak" for a while. When you restart the engine you will become very unpopular due to all of the smoke and other stuff coming out of your tailpipe. It will stop. Repeat the process a second time if need be. I always change the engine oil after this act.
The Seafoam aerosol product will work wonderfully on your air intake. Do not use carburetor or brake cleaner on these due to the fact that many have a factory coating to resist buildup and the non Air Intake product can remove that coating causing more frequent cleaning.
Thnx to you both there,9599 & RaRuss. I stopped by O'Reilly's and talked to one of the guy's in the back that handles commercial accounts (First-Call) and he told me the same thing that both of you said. They don't have the SeaFoam in a spray, only in the liquid. He suggested pouring a portion of the SeaFoam into an empty spray bottle to squirt into the intake.
Good deal there, 9599. I'll look for it. I appreciate all the GREAT info you've provided.
Hope someday I can return the favor (tho' I doubt I know anything that could be helpful to you).
I really like this old Bronco. Like I said, it has 393K miles on it. But has been well cared for by me and the mechanic's in the shop where I worked until I retired in June '03.
They put a long-block in it @ 289K miles. SO, I've put another 104K miles since then.
