How healthy are we REALLY?

What are your chances?
And have you ever wished they were better?
And what about your kids...
HOW CAN WE CHANGE THINGS IN A POSITIVE WAY?

I'm going to be working out in my own gym soon -and bicycling anyway...
I always enjoyed looking around my neighborhood on a bicycle.
Have you ever gone biking yourself with the neighborhood kids?
(It's a great way to meet people)

Arnold Schwarzeneggers cut on it...

The real problem is this. In the late 1890s and early 1900s people had to work. They didn't rely on machines to do it for them. A typesetter did just that, he set the font plates into the printing press. A farmer did just that, he got his horse (or if he had some money a small tractor) and he WALKED the field behind the plow. People did HARD MANUAL labor. THe most physically fit people today are carpenters, and landscapers because they still do the old fashioned way. They don't sit behind a screen and push buttons. As we age our bodies deteriorate faster and faster. If the young kids aren't encouraged to get out of the house and do something other than play nintendo then we have issues. What are these kids being taught at this age? How to be fat lazy slobs, and that they need not worry about anytrhing because mommy and daddy will get it for them.... (I'll stop here for fear or being banned if I go on.. PM me if you want me to go more in depth and I'll post a link to a webpage.)

Anyone who is 40 and on up, do you recall ever seeing a fat kid? Being over 50, I don't remember any. Our entertainment was physical activity that went from 8-9 in the morning to 5 in the evening. I'm trying to get back into shape, but so dam hard. Guess I got spoiled by the remote control(s) and this dam computer. Now excuse me while I stuff my face sitting in my recliner, watching T.V. and surfing the net while I throw some of my clothes onto my catch-all which used to be called an excercise bike. Buuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrp.

sierraben - I can relate! Now that I have a house and some land to maintain 've been looking for ways to get more excersise. For example, I'm not BUYING a load of firewood for next winter, I'm splitting the wood myself. Last summer I had to build some exterior stairs down a hillside. Rather than rent a backhoe to dig out the clay, I did it by hand. I'm not motivated to sit on a stationary bike or lift weights on a bench, I'd much rather sit on the recliner with the remote (and TIVO!) and I've become set in my ways like that now.

As a society there are still small things we can do to try and keep in shape. I for one don't drive around for 10 minutes looking for the parking place closest to the door (actually with my rig I always look for a Dodge parked farther out to pull up next to ) I return my shopping cart to the cart return, and I pass many many carts just left in parking spaces for others to worry about. I take the stairs over the elevator when I can. I wore a pedometer for a week once, you'd be surprised at the amount of extra walking (excersise) you can get just by doing little things like this.

I eat 80% organic foods and I work out 9x a week; I'd say I'm pretty healthy My last trip to the doc resulted in a cholestrol workup typical of a 21 yr old marthon runner health nut (according to the doc). Not bad for somebody in their mid thirties.

Now if I could only cut out the booze and cigars

just 5x the gas tax. then people will have to walk or ride bicycles everywhere. btw my construction work is pretty physical but i'm still fat. but i have better endurance than guys who work ou t and stay in shape..

this is a serious problem though. people don't do physical work need to find other ways to get their exercise. and driving into town for cheeseburgers isn't it.

I have to say a lot of you folks are softies! Until recently, we got our firewood by HAND. Thats right we went up into the woods and chopped up the wood, loaded it onto the truck, and then split it when we got home. It was DAMN hard work, but it was fun because my brother and I enjoyed working with our dad. I am 17 years old, and I lift weights everyday, Im not going to brag but I will say im much stronger then most my age. I always do stuff outside, my parents taught us a hard work ethic. PS2, whats that? Never had, never will have one. Ive seen the fatso losers that play thoughs and its sick, they always seem to have a glazed over look in there eyes, you can tell theres no thinking going on in there. They also are so obessed with it that it is all they talk about. I went to school with kids that did nothing but play those video games and I never liked what I saw.

I am very physically fit and strong, and Im proud of it. My family has always been that way, we are hard workers and have no respcect for people that dont pull there own weight.

So to the answer the orgianl question, no were not healthier. Heart attacks, illness and diseases have skyrocketed recently, too many twinkies, not enough work.

Foot power vs. horse power
Nitrogen dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and nitric acid resulting when combined with water are among the most dangerous components of combustion-produced pollution. No smog device will remove them. That makes air pollution control by modificationof combustion system a waste of time. There is simply too much combustion today-most of it in automobiles.
Cars are being used for more and more short trips. This, in a country with an overweight problem which spends great sums for exercise machines. We should use bikes for short trips.
R.E. Augustine, Hamilton AFB, Calif.

So, I guess not enough people back then happened to read this persons letter.

May 1970 = too many short car trips by overweight population
May 2005 = too many short car trips by overweight population(now lots larger than in 1970 with more cars)

I go to thrift stores a lot to find the "lost older knowledge"(books, magazines), all the tips & tricks that I can't learn from an older generation anymore.....

You what really burns me is all of the diet fads. People are so uneducated (because they refuse to think) about what is healthy for your body. I worked construction for about 5 years. Some of the guys I worked with did it for much longer than that and were overweight. They were physically active guys, but exercise is only part of the equation. You can't exercise(physical work, ect.) for 10 hours a day, then proceed to drink beer and eat little debbies, and expect to fit and lean. Eating healthy is more of the equation than exercise. Why? Because your body will naturally rid itself of fat when given the proper nutrition. Also, eating smaller amounts of food more often will keep you metabolic rate up increasing the amount of calories burned. Sugar is the worst stuff for you. If you eat a lot of sugar, most of it will be stored as fat, as the body regulates the amount of glucose(sugar) allowed in the blood stream.
Salads aren't the answer either. Yes they are healthy, but you won't lose fat by eating salads alone. Your body needs the omega 3 fatty acids, protein, carborhydrates, fat, and so on. It is when these things become out of balance, mixed with stress and lack of exercise that we become overfat.
Notice how I keep referring to fat. Its fat that you want to lose, not weight. You could cut off your arm and say you have lost weight. Everyone seems to want the supermodel body, well they're not healthy folks. They're a coathanger for some fashion designer. It's not how much you weigh, its how much extra fat you have. Muscle weighs more than fat. I see skinny fat people all the time, and don't think they are any better off than myself. I would rather weigh 210lbs made up of mostly muscle than 160lbs. made up of mostly fat.

Eat right, exercise, get rid of what causes you stress(instead of taking pills for it), and clean the garbage out of your mind. Then you will be healthy(ier). I'm not trying to step on toes here. I not a health nut, I'm stressed, and could stand to lose about 10lbs of fat. I won't buy into what the mainstream considers to healthy though. I don't care how many doctors they have on their side.

I'll get off the soap box now.......NEXT!

"Trimspa BABY!" Yeah, we are a nation of fad followers, aren't we? At least a large portion of us seem to be. As proven by Trimspa, anyone can go out, make up some weight loss pill, get a washed up celebrity to market it and get rich by the fad followers. And then there are the just dangerous ones, like phen-phen (did I spell that right?) that really messed up some user's hearts!

Very true. I will unfortuantely eat everything put in front of me, maybe due to my upbringing, you know always being reminded that there are starving kids in (insert country here) to make me feel bad if I didn't eat everything. The way to control how much you eat at a time is simple, put less on the plate! Don't supersize (in fact stay away from Fast food except as a treat ); don't be afraid to bring some of your gigantic restaurant portion home for the next day, etc.

Man I couldn't BEAT that argument through the heads of the many people I knew who went on that stupid Atkins "diet"! You know how they all ended up? Skinny fat! Atkins made them lose muscle mass, not fat - and did so in a very unhealthy way known as ketosis! Ketosis is VERY bad for your body, for those who don't know it's the residual toxins (bad) left in your system after the body burns its own muscle tissue.

And a lot of people on this forum helped me prove this point (sort of) a while back with my post, "How Skinny?". I wrote it asking for feedback because I was trying to prove to a close friend that contrary to Hollywood belief, the average man does not want to date a coathanger!

Very good points you brought up 773. OK, who wants the soapbox now? I'm practically giving it away

Don't forget, we're also a nation of "studies have shown...." All because some dotor(s) or scientist(s) put their name(s) to it. Give me a 100 million dollars (of taxpayer money) and my study will prove that mainstream America is braindead.

Same here. Though as long as you eat the right stuff, its not that bad. I will probably raise my daughter to take less at first, and if she's still hungry then get seconds. If you eat slower(and actually taste your food) it will take less to fill you up. It is when we inhale our food that we then realize we just consumed an entire side of beef. I know this because I too inhale my food.

BTW: cool avatar, I was actually going too use that myself. Shake rules!
