just talking with others in a different forum, wondering, are there any AOD trans that fit the clev? Want to stuff one in a 83 rustang. also does anyone know, will it fit? not scared to modify, but don't want this to take years, only days.
Since the AOD was factory installed in Mustangs fitment shouldn't be a big deal. You will have to use either a 164 tooth 28 oz C-4 flexplate or a 351W AOD flexplate as 351c and 351w share the same balance. The Mustang AOD,T-5 and C-4 mount is the same so depending on what transmission you have now you may be able to re-use the mount but you will probably have to grind the welds holding the crossmember to the tubes and slide the crossmember to where you need it and re-weld.The Ford Racing aluminum driveshaft fits AOD/C-4/T-5/SROD so they all have to be fairly equal in length but I remember reading somewhere once that some AOD's are longer than others so you might want to look into it.There used to be some good info on doing the swap on the Windsor-fox website, particularly important is getting the TV cable set up right.I have a 351c in my 86 Mustang but I used a C-4.
what gears do you run in the back. apparantly this car i have was a four banger and goin down the road requires around 25-2800rpms! thats why i was thinking of the aod. that and up here low grade gasoline is going for about 80-90 cents a litre!
I have 3.55 gears from an F-150 in my Mustang but it isn't my daily driver. My car was originally a 4 cyl car as well but I changed the rear end from a 7.5 to an 8.8.I feel your pain on the gas prices, last time I got gas it was 89.9 a litre.
I am looking into the same thing. I have a 351C, C4, 3.80 gears and want to put an aod in. what I have found is that all small block ford trannys will bolt up to it, but if you leave the stock 351C flexplate in there then the starter wont fit in it, I Know from experience. the AOD is the same length as the C4 the AODE is 2 inches shorter I believe. so in all im still not sure which flexplate we would need to use. I thought the 351M, 400 used the big block bolt patterns and assumed the flexplates were also the larger 172 teeth.
If you go to the Windsor-fox website and check out the frequently asked questions area there is lots of info on the AOD swap.I used an AOD flexplate with a C-4 once so you should be able to use the 164 tooth C-4 flexplate with an AOD.
use the 28oz inbalance small block flexplate on hte cleveland, and a late model mustang gear drive starter it works just fine. and it will bolt right up. Also the cleveland uses the same motor mounts, and perches as the 302/351w so that part is a drop in, were you get into trouble is the accery mounts, dist, exhaust etc but to set the engine into the car is a breeze.
I had a '73 Ranchero with a shot 400, got hold of a freshly rebuilt 351C-4bbl and swapped it in. I originally put an AOD behind it, everything fit well using whatever stock parts I had scrounged. I don't remember what size flexplate I used, I guess it was whatever was on the engine when I got it. AOD turned out to be going bad, so I switched to a C6. That's the combination I still have with that engine in my '72 F250, but I have another AOD sitting in an '84 Town Car. Might swap it in when I get back to work on the truck. -TD
