The one on the right head goes to the heater core inlet and the one to the waterpump is the return from the heater core. Just looked at this the other day, thinking about installing a vacuum-operated heater valve before the inlet for the summer.
Thanks, It's already hot here so I'm going to do mine this weekend. I'm going to install a shutoff valve I got from plumbing dept at Lowes in the inlet line. It is cheaper and quicker. Should work just fine. Anybody see any reason not to do it this way????????

If you stop the flow to the heater core won't this cause it to corrode and possibly leak when the water supply is opened again ??
Also, if you put a shut off valve on the intake line won't this cause excessive pressure on that line ? Why not just do a loop outside the heater core like a "U" shaped connection between the intake and outlet ? But this would also cause corrsion wouldn't it ?
Just thinking ! Cause I also live in S. TX and it's hot already.
We've alwys just put a valve on the inlet, never thought of looping it. Think about putting a coolant filter in at the same time? I think I'm going to do it on mine.
do you have a switch for the vacum operated valve. i live in michigan so i still need my heater in the mornings. is there a way to open and close a valve.
ok got to thinking about the switch question. do you or could you tie in with the heater controls so that when you want heat you put vacum to or remove vacum to allow the valve to open? has anybody done it this way?
Thinking is dangerous. add one more thing to the list to do to my truck.
ok guys, I think I screwed up. I put the valve in the hose coming from the water pump. I read above that it should be on the hose coming from the right side of the block. Please confirm this. Oh buy the way I got a valve at autozone, it is for the international scout. it has a control on it so you can route it through the fire wall and control it in the cab. anyhow any info on the above problem let me know.
The vacuum operated valve only closes when the climate control is on max cool. The vacuum line for the door that closes for recirculating air is used to operate the valve. It does not close the valve when in the normal position. This type is sold as a kit (valve and hose), but could be made up yourself. A manual valve would stop coolant flow in all positions to eliminate the heat in normal and vent also.
scotwms, you have the valve after the heater core.
