Hey guys, my 99 PSD has been acting up lately. I posted a while back https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=364173 and I havent done anything to the truck since and havent had any problems until this last weekend.
Yesterday I bought a new CPS and put it in. Drove the truck twice and had no problems.....thought it was fixed. This morning it took 3 tries to start the truck. Which is exactly what it did this past weekend. First two tries the motor would just turn over and you could hear the glowplug relays energize while cranking. On the third try you couldnt hear the relays and the truck fires right up. One thing I did notice was on the third try (I would only crank for about 5 seconds the first two tries) the batteries had already wore down and the starter would struggle a little to turn the motor over but it started up.
Could my batteries be bad enough that they dont have enough juice to fully energize the glow plugs AND turn the motor over.
Normally I will never hear the glow plug relays when the truck is cranking over and starts. I only hear them clicking on and off when the truck DOES NOT start.
Also, after that other post, the first time I experienced this problem, I was checking the batteries and the water was real low in both batteries. I filled the water up and looking through the site glass on one of the batteries it stayed red. My dad has a battery tester that I will use later today, could a bad battery be causing all this?
Definitely! I would suspect that the batteries are weak, or at least one of them is bad. Either way, you'll need to load test them to make sure. Do each battery individually while it is disconnected from the system. You can not properly load test the batteries while they are connected together. If you have a bad one, change them both, not just the bad one.
