My e99 f250 has been getting harder and harder to start over the last year.
I think one of my batteries is dying or dead but it still cranks fast while it does.
For instance when I tried starting today it seemed to crank just like normal but their was some relay clicking inside the cab that was abnormal.
My understanding is aside from cranking no power is required to start the motor? what if the dead battery is taking some cranking amps from the good battery preventing the computer from getting juice?
would the truck throw a code if it was a glow plug?
Your understanding is wrong. These are electronic diesels and there are plenty of things that need power for the engine to start and run. Get the batteries individually load tested and if one is bad, replace them both. Make sure the terminal clamps are clean and free of corrosion.
I chased a similar issue a while back. Ended up being the starter, which (fortunately) died in the driveway
One thing I came across during my troubleshooting is the common issue of the starter bolts coming loose- affecting ground and possibly gear meshing.
I check my starter bolts about twice a year or if I'm under there doing something I usually give the starter a good tug to make sure that it's still firmly mounted.
My last slow start was a two year on again/off again effort that ended up being my starter. Killed both my Optimas dead. I had 12VDC but it just wouldn't crank over. Took them to an auto parts store for their free battery test. 11 of 12 cells were dead.
If truck been running for awhile, especially towing, for some reason I would have to get out, I'd leave it on. It would be a bear to start. Found out my tin nut was loose
I'm about 400 miles shy of my oil change interval (5k) So I'm going to go ahead and change that but I did pull two codes today .
P0603 — PCED Internal control module KAM error Open PCM pin, disconnected B+, faulty PCM EDIT : Just saw that this is ok due to DPTuner.
P0470 — EBP Exhaust back pressure sensor circuit malfunction Biased sensor, open signal return
As far as rotation speed this sucker is cranking fast.
