Greetings all
So I'm debating between an Expy and and Expo. Something around 03-04. I've got a small daughter and a crap load of S&R gear etc. My current vehicle is a Grand Cherokee. Trying to see what I want to replace it with. I want the Expy but the wife wants the Expo, she's doesn't like the bigger SUVs.
Thanks
El Capitan.
We went through the same thing recently. After my wife drove the Explorer and saw what a waste the third seat was, she was ready to keep looking.
We ended up buying a clean 2001 EB. At that time I think the biggest selling point for her, was the heated seats and the moonroof but she was still leary of driving it everyday. Now after driving it for a couple of months she loves the way it handles, parks, etc. She still is crazy about the sunroof and heated seats, though.
I bought an 05 explorer EB with the 4.6 it has all the bells and whistles like heated seats and moonroof, etc. it really is a nice vehicle for a daily driver, I think the lenght is great for parking in garages I do wish it was just a little wider, I recently sat in and exped. limited and it was very comfortable I may decide to go with that next time for the added width. Depending on your needs I don't think you would be disapointed with the explorer it is a sweet package.
Thanks gentlemen
The wife's only about 5'3-4. She's a short little thing. She doesn't like the big cars. Hell I just bought her a Ford Taurus 03 because her old taurus was without adjustable pedals. She was prego last year and I got really nervous with her sitting that close to the air bag.
Can you get an Expy with adjustable pedals. My 98 Mountaineer she didn't have any problems reaching the pedals. I might go look at our local Ford Dealer at an 04 Expy and an 02 Expo. Will an Expy fit in a garage with a 8' door? How wide is an Expy?
I think the adjustable pedals started in 99 or 2000. We have a 2001 Expedition and my wife is a little taller 5'6". It is her daily driver and she loves it. we had an Explorer before and got 16-18mpg the Expedition gets 13-16mpg with the 5.4L and 4x4. The interior room is well worth the slightly lower milage compared to the Explorer for us. the thing is a tank in the snow, we ski, the added height while tougher to get in is great for driving. I feel it is very safe for my family because of its size. the one thing I would suggest if you test drive one is have your wife try parking it a few times in a mall or grocery store while its busy, go through your banks drive through, and a fast food drive through, see if it fits in yor garage. Better yet some dealers let you take one home overnight and drive it in your normal everyday situations and see how it works for both of you.
The width of an 04 Expy including mirrors is 92.4", only 3.6" shy of 8 feet. With the mirrors folded in, it's 78.7". Vertical clearance was a concern for me, not for fitting into my garage (I didn't even try), but for fitting into a parking garage. And to make matters worse, I needed to mount a bike rack on the roof. That adds about 3" to the height of the truck, which means I can just barely fit into a 6'8" garage. But the nice thing is I can remove the Thule rack fairly easily and just put it in the back of the truck. Now that I have an Expedition, I couldn't imagine getting by with the limited interior space of an Explorer.

...
How wide is an Expy?
My '99 has adjustable pedals, so yeah you can get 'em.
I don't have exact measurement numbers, but my Expy is exactly 2 feet shorter and 2 inches lower (because I have air suspension) than my room mates F150 Supercrew. All other dimensions are the same. I don't know if that helps or not.
Definitely go with the expy, The explorer is way too small. Cramped in the middle and back seats. My girlfriend thought my truck was too big for her untill she drove it once.. now she loves it. My friend have explorers and jeeps and whenever I get into it I feel like I have no room at all I hate it. You will be alot happier with the expy.
Back in 1998, I traded in my '94 Bonneville for a 1999 Expedition. I went through a little (3-4 days) transition period before I got used to the vehicle, but I got the hang of it. Now, after 83,000 miles of driving, I can practically drive it on a tightrope.
I certain that your wife would become used to driving it after a brief time.
