I used a vauum cleaner and the slim attachment used to clean small corners on my filters. I don't use the oil because it can get through the filter and then on the MAF sensor and can damage it.

uuuhhhhhhh....you have to use the air filter oil or else the filter wont work. I'd fix that if i were you. As for cleaning it, did you really find a bottle of cleaner for $40. That seems really high. I though a gallon was like $25. A normal bottle is only like $12. Anyway, brush or suck off the big, loose dirt clumps and then spray it down with cleaner. Next, spray the filter from the clean side with a water hose. After it dries, make sure every pleat is covered in oil.

Weird ..
We have a 'senior user' asking "and i got a little tube of K&N oil where do i put that"
(ever hear of reading the directions ??)
and an "elder user" saying :"I don't use the oil because it can get through the filter"
(again,directions)
Pimp is right .. you *have* to use the oil or the filter will let particles into the intake and into the engine. You're supposed to let the oil soak into the filter after you clean it. If you over-oil there may be something going into the MAF sensor, but only if you drench it..
Sorry for being kinda negative, but other people may do the same thing as you do and wear out their engine prematurely..
PS: I've been using K&N filters (with the oil) on vehicles and motorcycles for years without problems..

Yup, jpw is right. And the recharge kit is only like $10. Comes with oil and cleaner. You're not supposed to clean off the filter in between cleanings either. The dirt will grow off the filter. When I pulled mine off my Suburban it had an inch of dirt/oil build up sticking straight out sideways. When you "read the directions", that is what you should expect.

Ok...I run a supercharger on my truck. The blower obviously pulls more air through the filter so on a N/A application, a little oil will be fine.

I've been running without oil on my filter for three years now and haven't had a single issue with my MAF because of it. As a matter of fact, I ported my lower intake manifold about 9 months ago and the runners were suprisingly clean.
The ones I know of that have had problems (using oil) were also boosted applications. Since the vehicle in mention is not, then I retract what I said about not using any oil.

I dont beleive post rankings matter in knowledge. Heck, goto the General Conversation forum and theres 'Post Masters' that probably don't know how to change their air filters.

How would you know Posting Guru? (just kidding)

What are the various levels of posting ranks? Is there a "Posting Legend"? That's my goal.

An air filter....what that??

Post Fiend is the most i've seen (5000+ posts). Anyone with 10k+ posts is usually a moderator, so you can't see their ranks.

well this is the first time i have used the K&N filter and the oil came with the filter and it didn't have any directions on it, it has been in my glove box for quite a while so if there were any directions they were wore off.
Anyway i blowed it out with a air hose spayed it down with some purple power then rinsed and let dry and put the oil on all the pleats on both sides that is what i really neede to know is which side because there was really only enough oil to do one side but i used it sparingly

Im sure you can take a powerwasher and spray it good and let it dry, i dont know if it would hurt it or not. I'd just buy the oil. I'm not a K&N fan, seems to be a big waste of money. my buddy thinks it added 12 horsepower to his 99 f150 with the 4.6 in it. I say in your dreams.

since i put mine in i have noticed better airflow but haven't noticed more hp or better gas milage. this has always had me wondering; they say that the k&n gives you more hp and improves gas milage, it seems to me that the more hp you got the more gas you would burn.

"it seems to me that the more hp you got the more gas you would burn".

Not necessarily...much HP is just restriced (exhaust manifolds, cheap filters, mufflers). If you free this HP, you get the same, if not, a little better mileage.

Now, when you make HP, like a supercharge, then you start losing mpg.

....I think lol

i got the "air hog" from Fram, i guess its the same thing, but this came in a cool pig box..ahahahahha i noticed the diffrence. but it very well could all be in my head. But between the tune up...plugs/wires, cap & rotor, oil change and what not i went from 8mpg, to 12...so....
