If one is available, is it going to be a longer reach to use it? I am short and my arms are for an even shorter person, so my F250 gets built this week and I may get it next week and would also be interested in a short shifter. Will that affect warranty? thnx!
I also am awaiting delivery of my 2005 F350 V10 with the 6-speed. I am expecting delivery next week (5/16). I hadn't thought of getting a short shifter. I would think that it would be pretty far to reach 6th gear. I also think that it would be pretty hard to shift with a shorter shift lever. I have driven a buddy of mine's Duramax with the ZF S6-650 and it shifts pretty hard (like a big truck). I can't say I would never get a short shifter, but I don't think that it would increase the performance of my truck.
blackclouddiesel.com sells a short shifter made by BD-power. Supposed to make a HUGE difference in the shifts. I want to get one, but have other mods on the list before it. Ive heard nothing but good things about it.
It CAN be done right. The shifter just needs to be long enough and angled , bent or S shaped toward the driver more. Is anyone familiar with the actual shifter lever BD uses?
The BD kit replaces the shift tower, not the shift lever. It uses the factory shift lever and boot, and replaces the actual shift tower, held on by 4 or 6 bolts at the top of the tranmission. It will look stock when installed.
I don't know about the trucks, but in many sports cars a short-throw shifter changes the fulcrum of the lever, not the length of the lever. Thus, you'll push a stick the same length as the one you have now... more effort, less distance.
there is definatly a COTS kit. what it does is have a riser block on top of the trans housing, and then an extended lever arm on the low side of the pivot ball. your hand travels less far, and therefore the shift effort must increase, as you have lost a mechanical advantage over the moving parts.
