Quick comment. 2005 PSD with 14,000 miles. I too smelled diesel exhaust fumes at first then later. I reported the smell when at high altitude (Tahoe) to dealer and told him that after I got home, I spotted black soot on both exhaust manifolds. Also mentioned that a TSB I found states that gaskets should be installed if smell is noticed. Gaskets were then replaced without further discussion.
Like you were running alcohol in a latemodel stockcar lol
Best description yet. I LOVE that smell! I smell it once in a while, but never in the cab with the windows up. Definitely exhaust. I was pretty psyched the first time I smelled it. Makes the garage smell better
I suffered with the persistent skunky smell in the cab of my late 04 6.0 diesel and it only went away when I had a leaky hydroboost unit replaced last week. The hydroboost is the brake booster that receives pressure from the power steering pump. It is mounted right next to the brake fluid reservoir. The reason it stank is because it was leaking Merkon 5 Automatic transmission fluid which stinks like a skunk. The Merkon SP ATF fluid in the transmission also stinks like a skunk and some say that they call it SP to stand for "stinky poo".
I also had a leaky pressure hose that runs from my power steering pump to Hydroboost. I replaced that with a hose from NAPA auto supply which was a stronger hose than my original hose which was crippled with a worn out quick release fitting on the connection to the PS pump.
I am so happy now that the skunk is gone from my truck.
