Question Cab Smell

I just took delivery of a 2005 Crew Cab SB 6.0 in 4X4 with the Lariat package.

I keep smelling soemthing in the cab that I thought was either fumes from the hte new engine burning off paint or the new leather interior. But now, I am not so sure.

The smell I keep referring to reminds me of burnt onion rings and begins to occur once the engine has warmed up after 10 minutes of driving.

Any thoughts on what this could be?

Theres a skunk smell that is due to the routing of exhaust back into the intake. The fix is supposed to be tightening the CAC hoses (blue fitting). I haven't tried the fix yet to see if it works.

I had to smell this for the first 1000 miles or so, then it went away on its own. I remember thinking that it smelled like I was running a propane vehicle.

I noticed that skunk smell too when my 05 was working on her first 1500 miles or so. I was told that it was the new vynal smell. You mean it wasn't???
Oh well, it's gone now.

Nope, apparently we are sniffin' exhaust...

I've heard for some it comes and goes, it will be interesting to see if yours stays away.

Didn't smell like exhaust to me. I actually did get out several times and put my face near the exhaust to see if it was the same smell - it wasn't. The smell that went away was more like onions or garlic mixed with some kind of hot metal. And I only noticed it when the vents were set to outside. Since it went away on its own I assumed it was something under the hood burning off some kind of coating.

I would look to see if some paint got on the exhaust manifold/exhaust system and is slowly burning off.

The skunk smell is apparently from the main drive belts that have a coating on them. Ford's main drive belts were updated sometime in late '03 I believe.

Some owners say that their stink goes away after awhile, while others say that it comes and goes.

I find that my "skunk" seems more noticeable in hotter weather.

Shoot that critter!

Talking Thanks To Everyone Who Responded!

As soon as I get it back from the dealer (trust me, you wouldn't believe what I've been through in teh past week), I'll check the CAC hoses.

If that doesn't do the trick, I'll give it some more time to see if it's a coating on the main drive belt.

I had the skunk smell in my 2005 F250 6.0L CC 4x4 from the first day I picked it up at the dealer. It was worse on hot days and it would go away if I put the AC on recirculate so that outside air wasn't being brought in. It could definitely be smelled on the outside around the front end of the truck after coming back from a drive.

Somebody posted a note here awhile ago about the smell being due to the belt coatings and that everytime they replaced the belt, the smell came back but it always went away after about 1200 miles of driving were put on the belt.

I was concerned about the smell but after reading that post, I decided to wait and see what happened. I didn't believe the skunky smell was due to the CAC hoses in my truck because the 2005 models use the new clamps.

Anyway, my odometer just turned over 1400 miles and the skunk smell has been gone for about the last 400 miles.

Wait until you get about 1200 miles on the truck and I think the smell will be gone.

I have this same smell, although it actually smells like the exhaust is coming inside the truck. Its a F350 CC DRW 18 miles when I took Delivery today. The exhaust smells the same. Like you were running alcohol in a latemodel stockcar lol

The smell in my truck went completely away. Then, I changed the oil and it came back and lasted for about 800 miles. Now it is gone again. I am starting to think that maybe Shell Rotella T somehow contributes to the odor? I will let you know if it comes back again with my next oil change.
