You've got to lift the engine at least. Unbolt each motor mount and lift it as high as you can without damaging any linkages (carb and tranny). You'll want to wedge some 2x4s in between the block and the mounts in case your hoist gives up. Don't want to lose any fingers.
Now, if you don't have a hoist, it gets tricky. I've heard of guys using floor jacks etc.
