So I have a line on a full tripower setup for my 390; intake, 3 new(or freshly rebuilt) carbs, linkages, air cleaner. The guy wants $800 canadian for it. What do you guys think? My motor is .030 over with 9.5 to 1 compression, crane 901 cam, headers, 4 spd manual. Right now I'm running a 600 holley vacuum secondaries and it seems like we spend a lot of time rebuilding it and tuning it
That is an excellent deal! I see them on a regular basis on eBay for $1200-1500 complete. Get the fuel canister if possible as they go for $200 used in most cases. Also distributor height might be an issue depending on the one you have. I use the oem dual point/mech advance and fits fine. Also get the HP trends download. One of the best $20 I've spent. Covers tuning and rebuild also parts and modifcations. Excellent resource!!! http://www.orwell.net/~hptrends/index.htm This has been a major help to me when I rebuilt mine off the 406. I've also found the holley rebuild kits to be the best if ever needed. Now keep in mind there were two types of tripower intakes. First the std off the Galaxie with angled carb pads to compensate for engine angle. Second the T-Bird intake where the carbs sat flat due to the engine sitting level in the T-bird frame. You would want the Galaxie style for easy application. Good luck, G.
I was reading somewhere about possible clearance issues in trucks. Do you know anything about that? How do you like the performance and mileage? Will the ports match my heads. They are D2TA (D2TE?) I believe. Thanks for the input!
I'm not exactly sure about the underhood space in a truck but I think it will be fine. The tripower setup is comparable to the 2x4 lowriser size wise. As far as the intake matching the heads this will not be the best combo. The tripower intake ports are longer than the D2TE head ports and will hang down a bit. Some guys will epoxy the intake ports to get a better match which works ok. But yes you can bolt it on and have it run pretty good. Performance is great as long as it's properly tuned but gas mileage will not be a strong point. You can adjust the linkage to best suit your driving. A bud of mine runs his off the center carb on his 63 Galaxie around town. Just keep in mind it's not for everyone but fun if you like to tweak and tinker. G.
If you're gonna go through all trouble to install that setup, you might consider a cam upgrade. I don't think the 901 is going to use all that flow capability.
