My 85 F150 (351, C6, 4x4) recently developed an oil leak. I drove back to school this weekend (about 30 highway miles), and the oil pressure was fine the whole way. As soon as I left the highway and hit a stop light, the oil pressure dropped all the way down - scared the crap out of me! Yet, as soon as the light changed and I revved it, oil pressure came right back to normal. Same thing occurred until I made it to the parking lot. When I got out to check it, there was oil dripping from the oil pan and the tranny pan (looked like it flew from the oil pan). I changed the oil about two weeks ago and it was fine before that. The filter is on tight, and I tightened all of the valve cover bolts today, and I really couldn't see where the oil was coming from (the whole underside is oily and dirty) and would just like any suggestions before I try and drive her. I put 1 and 1/2 quarts of oil in today, but my dipstick never seems to show how much oil is in there, always shows way over the line no matter how much is there. Any help will be great.
If the leak is coming from the rear , its most likely the rear main oil seal . Verify the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge . Put enough oil in it so that it shows full before you check the pressure or drive it . If the rear main seal has a leak like you described , it wont take long to leak a lot of oil under normal driving .

Make sure you know how much oil you have in it. If you changed the oil last week and put 5 quarts back in, what did your stick read? Make a mark and use that for your full line. If you dump too much oil in, the oil will tend to "fly out" of those areas that aren't sealed. It sounds like your oil pan gasket is gone, get under there with a scraper and some cleaner (Purple Power or Gunk) and get the pan clean. That's the only way you can figure out what's going on.
