Okay, so I got rained out for right now, so I thought i'd ask for any tips relating to replacing ball joints. The rig i'm working on has a D44 HP, and I'm kinda stuck. I got the hub/disk brake assembly off, and now I'm having a hard time getting the next piece (the one that holds the brake caliper) off. I think it's just rusted on, but there's only room to pound on it on one side, so It's being real difficult.
Also, as I've never done this before, i dont know what lies ahead of me in removing and replacing the ball joints. Any suggestions are appreciated. THANKS!
The spindle or knuckle? For the spindle there are holes in the back stick a bar in there and whack it. For the knuckle get a much bigger hammer and whack the crap out of it.
I just hit the backside of the caliper mount enough to get a cold chisel in there, and hammered it in a bit, then took another chisel to the other side and tapped them evenly to pop the spindle and caliper mount off.
To break the ball joints out of the "C", I left the nut on the threads and hit the top ball joint with a small sledge. Once you get the knuckle out, then the fun begins. I ended up supporting the knuckle on the concrete and hitting a bar with the sledge to drive them out.
I rented a tool from the zone to change mine. Not to bad as long as you have a vise to hold the knuckle.
Also this tool can be pruchased from Harbor Freight for around $120 Also works good for u joints.
Hmmm. I got the old ball joint out, but gettin the new one in IS the fun part lol. So, if there arent any good tricks to gettin em in, i might have to wait this one out and take the knuckles to work tomarrow and use the press. Dunno if my mom will like me bringin those when she DROPS ME OFF lol
Alright, got it all together and on the road. I was crazy to think that I could do it without a press, it was pretty easy with it, just took my lunch break. Thanks for the help yall
