I have a 90 bronco, 351, e40d. I have been trying to fix a lack of power problem in my car. I have checked the tps, timing, and etc. It has been like this for a while. I have noticed recently that when I put in refuel the tank, the car seems to run a bit better and quieter but the power goes away after a while. I was wondering if it had something to do with the fuel system. Would it be the pressure regulator or fuel pump? Would it be worth it to get the fuel injectors cleaned. This cars is at 190,000 miles. So is the power loss the result of old age and would putting a new or rebuilt engine be worth it? If i cannot fix the car like a honda or toyota, my mom will make me buy a small fuel efficient car. I'm a big guy, so i don't like driving these small cars, so please help me out. Any help would be appreciated.
there are 2 fuel pumps on your bronco i believe. one on the rail which is high pressure, and one in the tanl. it could be that the one in your tank is not working good. what exactly do you mean power loss? is it idling erratically? did you replace the pcv valve?
Sorry for the vague description. What I mean by power loss is that when I press the accelerator it takes a while for the car to do what i want it to. I have to press the gas farther for the car to get going. Also when the car is moving, i press the gas farther, but the engine doesn't change rpm's for a few moments, then it slowly builds up rpms.
I looked up the type of fuel pump in my haynes manual and it says that 1990 broncos have a single intank fuel pump. I have been hesitant to change it because it is very expensive.
I thank you for the reply and hope you have other advice. I really would like to keep the car because it is very nice except for the performance.
i had a simular problem with my 1995 5.0 if you see the lack of power. i think that it was the map sensor because when i changed it it got alot better and is great now. i would change the sparkplugs, wires rotor. then if it does not get better check into the map sensor. i have all the power i need now and before when i went from gear to gear i had a delay too before and now i dont.
goood luck
It wouldn't hurt to have the fuel pressure checked. 190k is alot of miles for the pump.

Thanks for all the responses. To answer your question, no I have not found the problem yet. The car seems to struggle alot to get going. I thinking it has more to do with the age of the engine. I going to do compression testing. If the engine turns out to be bad, I'll get a new engine or buy a new ford. If you guys still have any suggestions, feel free to tell me. Thanks.
