I have a 1977 F-100 with at 351m and auto-trans, I have improved the HP by adding cam, headers, 4-bbl carb and intake. Now I need some help with traction. Any help on rear end gear and setup. The truck is stock so I believe it has a 9" rear end. Gas mileage is not a big issue (10 MPG now). I need some option Thanks
Is this a 2wd? What size tires are you running? Is this for 1/4 mile or will it see the highway? What gears do you have now?
I would suggest keeping the 9" rear, but for a driver that sees highway, go with 3.50 or 3.73 gears with a factory tracloc or aftermarket posi setup. Much lower of a gear and you rev high at 75+ mph interstate driving.
It is a 2WD model, as I get into this more I beleive the rear end is a Dana 44
I do not know what gear is in it now. I will be using it for show and go around town, and doing test and tune at the local strip. I am looking at a Powertrax no-slip traction system. I have 15" rims 245r15 tires nothing speical

Reason: addition
Does your axle have a removable rear cover or is it welded solid in the rear? A 9" has no rear cover. Almost all the 1/2 ton Fords in '73-79 had a 9" rear. The powertrax looks like a good setup. I'm planning to get a used factory limited slip and rebuild it with new clutches to install in my '73 F100 9". This will be more than enough for my daily driver and much cheaper than a aftermarket setup.
After " breaking " two factory posi units I went with a " detroit locker " Because I was told they are bullet proof, that was fifteen years ago,and no trouble since. There is the occasional embarassing CLUNK when it does its thing.
Hey there,
I'm running 3.50 gears with an auburn pro series limited slip. I'm also running 325/50-15 BF Goodrich Drag Radials in the back.(which are about 28" tall) I also had Denny's driveshaft make me a driveshaft, they said they warranty for up to 900 horse(no worries there )I've placed my battery in the bed and am still deciding on a ladder bar system to also help with the traction issue. I'm running a 468 with streetfighter C-6 tranny. Good luck with your project.

I have a 77 351 m that I have been thinking about doing the same too.....
What size and brands did you use for your cam, headers, carb, and intake? Thank you. Please post or private message me with the answers.
The Cam was a Crane 290 with an edelbrock manifold, and 600 CFM Edelbrock 4 bbl carb. I had a valve job done with large exhaust and intake valves. A set of header with flowmaster muffler This weekend I added a HEI distrubitor there are a lot of options
Pdrhodes, If you have a 9 inch, look at the front of the rear axle where the 3rd member bolts up. There will be a little tag thats about 3/4" tall and maybe 3 inches long. It will have 2 rows of numbers. Post the bottom row and we will be able to tell you which gears are in it. Do yourself a favor and take a wire brush or something to scrape off all the crud that will be built up on it so you can read the numbers.
Marty, I bought a complete rear axle with the traction loc from the local wrecker that came from an early 80's model ford truck. I just cleaned and painted it, then bolted it in. No problems except I had to cange the emergency brake cables from my old rear to the new one. It's been working great for about 2 years now, and I have a 460 in my 73. I think I paid about 200 for mine. Just another option to consider.

I used Powertrax's cheap locker, and it performs as advertised. It is pretty noisy, ratcheting, clunking, banging etc, but it works great! and..... VERY easy to install...
